The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.Responsibilities
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
  • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
  • Assists in policy development especially on Humanitarian and Development Nexus from urban planning perspective, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
  • Undertakes and lead survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Participates in and lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
  • Supports liaison with other UN agencies and Governmental organizations for collaboration and cooperation under the scope of determined activities.
  • Undertake resource mobilization activities, analyzes risk and opportunities for increasing the efficiency of delivery.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
RequirementsCompetencies
  • PROFESSIONALISM : Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to territorial and urban planning, and urban design .
  • Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems in the fields of planning and urban innovation. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources.
  • Ability to independently develop planning concepts and proposal and produce high quality planning and design outputs, using relevant software. Familiarity with decision making process, participatory processes and tools for urban planning.
  • Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.
  • The ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making and convey resulting information to management. Education
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Urban Planning, Development Studies, Urban Studies, Social Science, economics or a related field is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in urban development, planning and design with direct proven experience in management of programmes and projects is required.
  • Experience within the UN system or similar international organization is desirable.
  • Experience with the use design software like AUTOCAD,ARCGIS, Adobe Illustrator is desirable.
  • Experience with data analysis tools is desirable.
