OverviewThe Assistant Vice President of Philanthropy (AVP) will: work collaboratively to develop, implement and achieve strategic plans for increasing private support; provide leadership and direction for major gifts, planned giving and the Women’s Initiative Network; be directly involved in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts; effectively communicate the mission and values of the Institute; have a working knowledge of current best practices in all aspects of fund raising; and collaborate with colleagues across the Institute. This position is part of the leadership team of the Philanthropy department.ResponsibilitiesStrategic Planning
  • Work closely with the VP and AVP of Operations to set departmental and individual fundraising, visit and proposal goals.
  • In concert with the VP and AVP of Operations, establish and adhere to annual operating budgets and ensure philanthropy programs are operating in a fiscally prudent and productive way.
  • Help develop and administer policies related to fundraising and gift stewardship.
  • Assist with the successful development and completion of capital and endowment campaign through personal solicitations as well as through leadership of the frontline fundraising team
Supervision
  • Supervise the work of the frontline fundraising team, Women’s Initiative Network team and planned giving director. Serve as a mentor for team members.
  • Evaluate staff on an annual basis using Institute-provided management tools.
Major Gift and Donor Management
  • Maintain a portfolio of approximately 50 donors and cultivate, solicit and steward major and leadership gifts.
  • Cultivate long-term relationships with key stakeholders including Institute leadership, clinicians and board members to encourage continued and increased funding.
Fundraising Management
  • Work in collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders to develop a portfolio of giving opportunities (cases for support) that document funding needs in terms of real program costs, how dollars impact people, actual or potential outcomes, shortfalls and exciting philanthropic opportunities.
  • Craft effective proposals based on target audience and present opportunities to donors to effectively match donor interests with Kennedy Krieger Institute funding needs.
  • Set agenda and lead regular prospect review meetings.
  • Use donor database to input all significant interactions, inputting contact reports and other significant actions in the system as required. Track fundraising progress and activities of direct reports through donor database to support progress towards defined goals.
External and Board Relations
  • As a member of the philanthropy leadership team, support volunteer management structure to include committees of the board of directors, foundation board or Institute programs.
QualificationsEDUCATION:
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Advanced degree or CFRE or other relevant advanced certification is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 8-10 years of progressive experience in development with an emphasis on major and or principal gifts, ideally within healthcare.
  • 3-5 years fundraising management experience desired.
