Posting Date: 2024-05-17The Hong Kong Polytechnic UniversityCENTRALISED ANIMAL FACILITIESAssistant Technical Officer (Ref.240517001-IE)DutiesThe appointee will be required to:(a) provide technical and operational support to the Centralised Animal Facilities (CAF) and its users in terms of animal handling, animal breeding, daily operation and experimental techniques;(b) be responsible for breeding programmes of selected species of mice and rats;(c) liaise with staff and students from internal units and sister institutions on various aspects of animal husbandry and holding services;(d) provide administrative and secretarial support to the CAF, including but not limited to the provision of customer service and the maintenance of CAF’s operation;(e) provide training and guidance to the junior staff of the CAF;(f) perform purchasing duties and liaise with suppliers, contractors and external parties;(g) stand-in for junior staff to maintain smooth operation of the CAF and uphold its hygienic standards; and(h) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of CAF or his/her delegates.The appointee will be required to work on shift and/or Saturdays/Sundays/public holidays.QualificationsApplicants should:(a) have a recognised degree in Biotechnology, Animal Science or a related discipline, preferably with a relevant master’s degree;(b) have at least two years’ hands-on experience in handling laboratory animals, with animal breeding experience being an advantage;(c) have a good knowledge of the use of animals in research and/or animal ethics;(d) have good computer literacy including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;(e) be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua being an advantage; and(f) have good communication and interpersonal skills.Conditions of ServiceA highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.
