about the roleYour role is to work on the thesis entitled : « Reconfiguration and orchestration of network's digital twins»Global context and problem of the subjectThe digital twin is part of the major strategic technological trends [1]. Digital twins maintain of an up-to-date digital representation of entities of interest in the physical world. For Orange, the continuous evolution of networks leads to increasing management complexity. This results in difficulties in automating network management: incident anticipation and management. To address this evolution, it is necessary to have a holistic vision of the networks. The digital twins of networks are seen as the major enabler to provide this vision and move towards the capabilities of next-generation autonomous networks: monitoring, simulation/impact analysis of equipment/configuration changes [2], orchestration of heterogeneous networks, impact analysis on different network layers [3], anomaly detection [4]...Scientific objective: results and challenges to overcomeThe doctoral student will work on the implementation of new methods, data models, algorithms, and software architectures for digital twins of networks. This work will be based on the Thing'in the future digital twin platform, as well as the work and data from Orange's networks. The major objectives are:- Define data models for digital twins that will represent the different networks (and different layers) to be orchestrated/simulated.- Develop approaches for synchronization, configuration, control, and orchestration of digital twins of heterogeneous/complex networks. These developments will take into account strong technical constraints (heterogeneity of underlying networks, access constraints, latency constraints, resource constraints, deployment constraints, scaling...).- Develop approaches for simulation analysis/network analysis based on the digital twins, in order to anticipate the impact of network reconfigurations (hardware or software), particularly in the case of optical transport networks [2][3].Methodological approach- Study of the state of the art in autonomous networks and digital twins, as well as emerging technologies in the corresponding domains.- Development of the approach, in collaboration with domain research experts and business experts: definition of architectures, data models, algorithms. The work may be based on previous related research work: historization of digital twins [5], complex digital twins [6], predictive approaches for digital twin graphs [7][8].- Implementation of complex digital twins prototypes in a use case related to Orange's internal projects on digital twins of networks (Evolution Platform, Sylva...).The work and prototypes developed should result in publications in the field of networks, digital twins, artificial intelligence, distributed systems, or the Internet of Things.about youSkills (scientific and technical) and personal qualities required for the positionThe required skills are those expected at a master's level/engineering school in computer science. Significant experience in one or more of the following areas would be greatly appreciated:Networks: network management (provisioning/configuration, monitoring, security...), virtual networksArtificial intelligence: machine learning, semantic webNoSQL databases/graph databasesDistributed systemsFor the implementation of the designed algorithms and their validation through simulations, programming skills are absolutely necessary. The candidate must demonstrate curiosity and autonomy. They must have a good command of English (written and spoken).Required education (master's degree, engineering degree, PhD, scientific and technical field...)Master's degree or engineering degree in computer scienceDesired experience (internships, projects...)The completion of projects and/or internships related to the above-mentioned skills will be highly valued.additional informationWhat makes this offer valuable?- You will be part of a multidisciplinary team and benefit from the expertise of its developers, researchers, and architects.- You will work on a unifying research project that highlights collaborations with various industrial and academic partners, where your analytical abilities and creativity will be stimulated.- Work on future digital twins is central to the development of the Thing in the future platform, and your work can be highlighted by Orange as innovative and differentiating elements in its future services."[1] https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2019-02-20-gartner-survey-reveals-digital-twins-are-entering-mai[2] Hall, et al, (2021).
