Check out our available internships.FunctionThe TSO in Belgium is also responsible to conduct several security of supply studies (short, medium and long term), vision studies, cost benefit analysis of future grid projects... Those studies are based on economic dispatch tools, which evaluate the need for additional capacity, the economic outputs or the margin available in the system for every hour of the year.Performing these studies are amongst the main tasks of the team 'SMA - Scenarios, Market & Adequacy analysis' within the Grid Development (GD) department in Elia.The models used by the SMA team comprise a large amount of assumptions, methodological choices, input data… that are required to model the electricity markets and estimate their dispatch in the future. The results of these models correspond to a Day-Ahead market dispatched with perfect foresight.Hence, no mismatch can occur in the results of these simulations. However, we know in reality that after a Day-Ahead dispatch, variations occur in the volumes sold on the market for electricity consumption and generation. And variations occur on different time-frames: Intra-Day market (9 hours to 15 min before) and Balancing time-frame (15 min to Real-Time). The goal here would be to develop a prototype that would capture these variations and assess if the system can cope with these variations in its dispatch.Based on an initial market dispatch, with a given load & RES generations time-series, with a given probability of power plant outages, your task will be to run Monte-Carlo simulations taking into account a probabilistic distribution of the forecast errors of load/res and forced outages.So for each run representing the Day-Ahead market, you will perform X runs (to define) of the model, to represent the Intra-Day market, where the load and RES forecast is refined.This internship will provide you with an opportunity to develop a state of the art methodology to model the intra-day market.
Understand current modelling of the economic dispatch model, working with perfect foresight.
Gather data on forecast error distribution for RES, Load and forced outages distribution.
Discuss and implement a methodology to model the Intra-Day market
Assess the impact on the dispatch when taking into account forecasts errors.
Your ProfileWe are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with the following profile:
A Post Graduate, BanaBa, Master, ManaMa or PhD degree. Preferably in IT, Informatics, Computer Science, Engineering (Energy, Electricity).
You have excellent communication and analytical skills, and like to work with data.
You're a problem solver and you're eager to learn.
You're fluent in English. You have an understanding of Dutch and/or French.

You can opt for an internship in the Autumn (sept - dec), Spring (Jan-Jun) and Summer (July-Sept). The internship lasts more than 12 weeks, depending on your availability and learning goals.
