MAINTENANCE MECHANIC 2 (MM2)Capital Asset Management Program - Yakima Construction Shop
Yakima, Washington - Yakima CountyPlease Note: this position requires a valid Washington Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate at the time of application.This is an opportunity to work on all phases of shop fabrication of metal products through fish screen construction and repair, miscellaneous metal works and new site construction.You will also operate hydraulic boom trucks for the removal and installation of fish screens, existing gantries, trash racks and needs of specific screen sites.Leque Restoration - Credit: WDFWPicture yourself,Participating in all phases of shop fabrication, field installations, site excavations and road and access site maintenance.With your experience,Perform dam maintenance and inspections on state owned dams according to the Department of Ecology (DOE) Dam Safety Guidelines.We are seeking a candidate,Who models WDFW values: Accountability, Service, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, and Empathy (ASPIRE).DutiesHere is what you will be doing,Welding/Fabrication and Equipment Operation:
  • Operate a variety of shop fabrication equipment such as oxyacetylene and arc welders, hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers and drill presses.
  • Cut, weld, braze and solder metal parts in the repair and replacement of parts for mechanical equipment, or in repair, replacement, or installation.
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications and use of Laser level to determine grades and elevations of cuts and fills.
  • Operate heavy trucks/trailers and equipment in earthmoving projects statewide.
  • Operate the following or equivalent machinery: John Deere 30 to 100 H.P. bulldozer, John Deere excavator 135-335, backhoe up to 76 H.P., 10-12-yard dump truck, John Deere roller/compactor SD 45D-SD 100D and John Deere 450 JLT-650 JLPG road grader.
  • Operate heavy truck/flatbed trailer combination to transport 30,000 LB. construction and road working/maintenance equipment statewide.
Dam/Dike, and Fish Screen Maintenance:
  • Perform maintenance on screen structures.
  • Dam and dike maintenance and inspections on State owned dams per Department of Ecology Dam Safety Guidelines.
Project Lead:
  • Direct, coordinate and lead crew in the installation of fish screens, boat docks, associated components, and miscellaneous metal works.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Duties are performed at construction sites on agency owned and co-managed areas.
  • Will work on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and work and drive in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, or snow.
  • Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around the project site.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Some tasks will involve being at a desk and working on a computer. May include working under fluorescent light, repetitively entering data into computer, and looking at a computer monitor for long periods of time.
  • Schedule:
  • Typically, Monday - Thursday, 6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.
  • Occasional 8-day work weeks including weekends, overtime as needed.
  • Travel Requirements:
  • Will include travel out of town with multiple overnight stays in hotels throughout Washington State is required during the Spring, Summer, and Fall construction seasons. This could be as much as 50-70% of the time.
  • Tools and Equipment:
  • Power tools and equipment such as hand tools, chain saws, drills, grinders, welders, oxy-acetylene torch, pumps, cranes, manual/portable chain hoists, backhoe and excavator.
  • Customer Interactions:
  • Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.
QualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four (4) years of experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic or welding trade.
AND
  • Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoe, and dump truck.
  • This experience can be concurrent with the required experience noted above.
Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Valid Washington Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Skill/Ability to:
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and verbal instruction and order parts, materials and equipment.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Skillfully operate laser levels to establish benchmarks and shoot elevation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:Job Knowledge:
  • Accepted practices, processes, materials, and tools of the welding trades.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trades.
  • Equipment assembly, installation, and repairs.
Ability to:
  • Maintain records regarding material, equipment, and repairs.
  • Work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Maintain and use tools and equipment to include the use of measuring instruments.
  • Use power tools and equipment such as hand tools, chain saws, drills, grinders, welders, oxy-acetylene torch, pumps, cranes, manual/portable chain hoists.
  • Interpret instructions and specifications.
  • Use personal computers and Microsoft Office.
Certification:
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
