  • Respond to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations; wild land fires, hazardous material incidents, and aircraft emergencies.
  • Respond to hazardous materials emergencies as a member of the department's hazardous materials team.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools to work in all phases of firefighting/rescue operations.
  • Respond to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses, and follow approved department protocols in providing basic life support and performing emergency procedures that are non-invasive.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties, and may be required to lift/carry personnel such as an adult male in emergency situations.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work a 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain both a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions and a government driver's license.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Incumbent is subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • The work requires the incumbent to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division; the appropriate valid Emergency Vehicle Operator’s certification is required.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.Specialized Experience Requirement:One year of specialized experience which includes: Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized fire department or brigade; Providing basic life support; AND Responding to and analyzing Hazardous Materials incidents.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-06 or above).In addition to meeting the experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable:Certification Requirements at time of application:
