Work is performed onboard US Naval ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, and temperature. Work is performed with equipment where carelessness could result in injury and/or death.Job Location: Norfolk, VA.Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Works under an AIT Project Manager supervision. Relies on experience and judgment to plan, estimate risks and accomplish goals.
  • Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them in position within hull of ship for riveting or welding: Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using scribe and hand tools
  • Knowledgeable regarding the following types of plating material: steel, copper nickel, aluminum, stainless steel
  • Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines
  • Use wedge and dog to secure the alignment
  • Create temporary access cuts to take something out of a ship or facilitate another trade to get into another compartment or a tank
  • Assess finished access cutting and beveling to ensure that the layout is being executed properly
  • Positions parts in hull of ship, assisted by Rigger
  • Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
  • Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.
  • Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
  • May prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts
  • May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding
  • May roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, using shop machinery, such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machine
Position RequirementsRequirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must pass background check
  • Must be U.S. Citizen
  • Minimum 1 - 3 years relevant experience on U.S. Navy ships
  • Able to obtain a Security clearance
  • Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels; must be able to obtain and retain Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) card.
  • Must be familiar with working in a naval-ship-work-environment
  • Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the mechanical engineering field
Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
  • Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  • Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
  • Must be able to wear standard PPE and use basic ship fitting tool list
