The Library Clerk I is responsible for processing library materials, adding materials to the library database, maintaining accurate processing procedures and inventory supplies, issuing new and updating current library cards, greeting the public, answering questions or directing patrons to appropriate personnel, and may oversee the work of volunteers and youth workers.Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalentMinimum number of years of directly related experience: One year of direct customer service experience working with the public.Education and/or experience preferences: Experience preferably in a library setting.Substitutions: One-year employed as a library page may be substituted for the experience requirement.Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: NoneNote -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.Required certifications, licenses or registrations: NonePreferred certifications, licenses or registrations: NoneKnowledge: Dewey Decimal system and Library software preferred. Integrated library systems or experience imputing and retrieving data from medium-large database products (such as SalesForce, QuickBooks, or inventory systems). Basic office procedures and protocols, such as reception, telephone etiquette, filing records and correspondence, sorting, and typing.Skills: Experience with cash handling and basic accounting procedures. Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position (must test at or above 30 net WPM). Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Good computer skills to include word processing. Must have excellent verbal communication skills.Abilities: Perform daily duties while facing regular interruptions and special projects; ability to prioritize workload. Ability to work as a team member and independently. Ability to clearly articulate policies, procedures, and general technology instruction; troubleshooting. Comprehend simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply. Perform these operations using units of money. Apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Deal with routine and standardized situations with occasional variation.Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with managerial staff to work on routine tasks and assignments. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: Answers routine questions via telephone and in person from vendors, customers and the general public in a courteous and efficient manner.The following functions are typical for this position.   • Maintains the library book-drop by sensitizing and desensitizing library materials, processing the daily shipments, checking returned items for damage, and routing materials to appropriate location. Checks library materials out to customers and checks them back in upon return. Prepares daily notices, run and processes the lapsed holds and holds to be pulled.
  • Provides excellent customer service to patrons by: greeting the public, answering questions or directing customers to the appropriate personnel, providing customers with information on their accounts, and answering and directing telephone calls. Issues new, and updates existing library cards by entering data into database, supports and supervises volunteers and youth workers in the absence of the department manager, acts as back-up for the Customer Service Representative, collects fines and fees from patrons, and handles cash in accordance with City Finance procedures.
  • Performs physical processing of library materials, adds items to the integrated library system; works with other departments on transmitting materials to be shelved and reviewed. Assists with routine database maintenance and special projects. Repairs and cleans damaged materials. Maintains the department supplies and equipment, ensures library cataloging vendors have necessary supplies; serves as a back-up for accepting deliveries and following loading dock procedures.
  • May be scheduled/required to work nights and weekends.
