- Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed for handling samples; i.e. gloves, safety glasses, or plastic booties.
- Work standing and sitting for 8 hours/day.
- Computer work, typing, filing.
- Ascends/descends step ladders.
- Kneeling, squatting.
- Perform duties at counter or desk for extended periods of time.
- Required to enter hazardous areas such as animal holding coolers; necropsy room; trim room and histology lab and tolerate foul odors and view deceased animals.
- This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- Position may require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
- Required to work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous material, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
- Regular exposure to dead animals, tissues, sick/injured animals, zoonotic diseases, foul odors, cleaning chemicals, and carcinogenic chemicals (regular handling of formalin).
- Required compliance with infection control protocols/precautions. Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions.
- Maintain a working schedule coordinated by service manager to provide coverage between 8:00am - 5:00pm.
- Work occasional overtime to meet operational needs.

- Experience working in a high demand work environment with unpredictable, heavy workloads and skill to move between work areas as needed while utilizing time management skills to prioritize and complete daily work assignments according to established deadlines and departmental standards and skill to receive and comply with directions and accommodate occasional projects or special deadlines both independently and in a team setting.
- Experience with billing, client services, and medical records in a veterinary medical environment, typing, and filing, preparing and proofreading correspondence, reports and informational documents, performing standard mathematical calculations.
- Experience using various programs and software for word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, entry and retrieval of medical records, and database management programs such as Excel and Word. Computations, to complete billing and data.
- Interpersonal oral and written communication and customer services skills, diplomacy and knowledge of animal anatomy, and medical terminology to provide general information and make the appropriate referrals and clearly and effectively interact with a diverse group of people: faculty, clients, residents, students and staff regarding veterinary terminology and related issues.
- Skill to operate and identify malfunctions in standard office equipment: calculators, fax machines, document scanners, photocopy machines, computers, dictation equipment, telephones, laminators, and multi-feature telephone, voicemail, and cell phone texting skills.
- Skill to adhere to safe work practices and standard operating guidelines as developed by campus, hospital and individual work units and be able to interpret policies and procedures to others.
- Demonstrated experience providing purchasing support for multiple areas throughout a single department using UC Davis purchasing protocols/practices.
- Experience working in an Anatomic Pathology Service and with pet cemeteries to arrange pick up of deceased pets.
- Knowledge of VMTH policies, VMACS computer systems and procedures affecting services, clients, and confidentiality of records and information.
