- Conducts yard inspections for adherence to safety requirements and proper maintenance of facility space; ensures training pad areas are free of debris, free of damage, and properly maintained.
- Checks vehicles (e.g., trucks, trailers, buses) to identify any visible damage, wear and tear, or potential safety issues; verifies vehicles are properly tagged with current and appropriate city and state stickers, license plates, and other identification.
- Performs random inspections using the CDL pre-trip inspection checklist to ensure safety and efficient operation of vehicles (e.g., wheels and rims, steering components, fluids, air brakes).
- Spot-checks students credentials prior to start of training sessions to verify they have current documentation (e.g., drivers license, CDL permit) to operate vehicles.
- Ensures yards training pad area meets all physical requirements (e.g., appropriate lighting, lane markings) to be accepted as a testing range by the Secretary of States Office.
- Coordinates with Secretary of State on scheduling testing dates for students to take the skills/drive portion of the CDL test at the yards training pad area. Works with Instructors in the set-up of different testing centers for different maneuvers.
- Requests and schedules maintenance of yard/training areas (e.g., snow removal, salt, sweeping) with colleges Maintenance Department.
- Assists Fleet Asset Manager in maintaining appropriate vehicle records and planning improvements to the yard/training area to meet the needs of students in the CDL Program.
- Ensures vehicles undergo required city and state inspections, and that on-road vehicles carry valid registration and insurance documents in truck cab.
- Responds to Instructors notifications that vehicles have mechanical issues, are not operating properly or in need of repair.
- Schedules and coordinates preventive maintenance of vehicles; drives vehicles to and from repair and maintenance shops.
- Receives notifications and reports of accidents occurring on the road or in the yard from Safety and Security Department and Instructors. Informs Fleet Asset Manager of accidents and needed repairs to colleges vehicle(s).
- Drives vehicles to fueling stations as needed; drives and moves vehicles to charging stations and relocates them within yard.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree from an accredited college preferred but not required
- Two years of experience repairing and/or driving commercial vehicles with a CDL License, Class A
- Must have a current State of Illinois CDL License, Class A
- Knowledge of pre-trip, post-trip, yard and road driving operations for trucks, trailers, and buses
- Knowledge of colleges CDL program requirements and Sate of Illinois regulatory requirements for obtaining a CDL License
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to walk perimeter of yard and training areas and to access truck cabs to conduct inspections
- Ability to work a varied work schedule to meet operational needs
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment
- Some proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office
