Job DescriptionTimmons Group is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer for our Geotechnical and Construction Services Group located in our Richmond, VA office location. A Geotechnical Engineer applies learned skills and technical ability to site and building projects by testing earth materials, evaluating their engineering properties, and estimating the materials' response to loading.Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:
  • The successful candidate will work on a variety of engineering consulting projects involving traditional geotechnical engineering analysis and designs for foundations (shallow and deep); slope stability and seepage; earth retention; dams and hydraulic structures; and groundwater.
  • The position includes work on engineering project teams performing geotechnical, civil and structural engineering designs.
  • Project work will include specifying, implementing, and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing and in-situ testing; performing facility inspections; geotechnical computer modeling; preparation of design plans and specifications; and writing reports.
  • This position may require out of town work assignments to meet client needs. Some work locations will feature rough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.
  • Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites.
Skills/Requirements of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering is desired
  • Ideal candidates will have 2 years of relevant work experience with traditional geotechnical engineering
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geotechnical analysis and design
  • Flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing approximately 50 pounds
