SummaryThe Senior Mechanical Engineer I provides engineering technical support for all aspects of the life of hydro and fossil electric generating stations, as well as transmission assets and facilities, from the engineering and design, fabrication and construction, operation and maintenance, to the decommissioning and deconstruction. Engineering responsibilities include inspections, condition assessments, computer modeling, hand or computer-based analysis, startup and testing technical support, troubleshooting, calculations, design, development of detailed fabrication/construction packages, inter-discipline and inter-department coordination, and construction and outage support for mechanical systems and equipment.Responsibilities
  • Lead a multi-discipline team of engineers to develop modification packages, perform analysis or provide engineered solutions.
  • Perform engineering services including development of designs, specifications and engineered solutions for various mechanical equipment and systems, to resolve problems or improvements to the existing systems or components.
  • Provide direction and review for the mechanical design and drafting personnel in the development of the project drawings.
  • Provide engineering support and oversight during construction or outage activities.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various mechanical equipment and systems for proper installation and operation, problem identification and troubleshooting, or improvements.
  • Develop 3D computer models and perform analysis of various components and assemblies using computer-based software including ANSYS.
  • Independently schedule and prioritize work to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Review work produced by other engineers, including designs and specifications.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for junior engineers.
  • Coordinate work with other disciplines and departments both in the home office and operating facilities for the successful development and execution of the project and solution of problems.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations on vendor products to ensure engineering requirements and Authority needs are satisfied.
  • Gather information (site, vendors, and other engineers) for engineering tasks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of the various hydro and fossil electric generation facilities.
  • Experience and knowledge of utility, commercial and industrial facilities, and the analysis, design and integration of their various mechanical systems and components.
  • Ability to apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to solve even the most complex engineering problems and make technical recommendations on design methods and obstacles on a project as well as programmatic level.
  • Extensive understanding of all the various types and disciplines' drawings required for electric generation facilities.
  • Extensive understanding of the fundamental drawing and specification system.
  • Extensive knowledge of and a working familiarity with current codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Ability to develop complete, accurate and detailed modification packages, specifications, drawings, and other engineered construction documents.
  • Understanding of Configuration Management.
  • Demonstrated performance as a leader on multi-discipline team projects, preferred.
  • Effective coaching skills for junior engineers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear, concise, complete, and articulate reports.
  • Computer literacy with a basic understanding of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Working knowledge of computer-based engineering modeling and analysis programs, preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of electric utility's policies and procedures, preferred.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, from a recognized college or university.
  • Professional Engineer's license registered in New York State.
  • Extensive experience with, and development in area(s) of expertise, of hydroelectric and fossil generation equipment and fundamentals, materials, controls, hydraulics, fluid flow, or similar subject matter of mechanical systems and theory.
  • Minimum of 10 years of related work experience.
  • Experience with electric utility policies and business practices preferred.
  • Experience in a lead engineer function for mechanical system projects as applied to the electric utility industry, preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 20% travel primarily within NY State to the operating facilities.
  • Occasional travel (less than 5%) outside of NY State, to other states and internationally for required training or factory inspections.
