Purpose of Position:A Staff Accountant performs a variety of duties such as preparing journal entries, assisting with audits and budgeting processes, reconciling accounts, and provides technical accounting, budget and other administrative support for Program Managers, under VP of Finance. Responsibilities include monitoring, analyzing and maintaining financial transactions for a wide variety of grants; tracking revenues and expenditures, and preparing required internal and external financial reports.Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Adherence to GAAP, best practices
  • Prepare monthly, recurring, and correcting journal entries
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations
  • Support month-end and year-end close
  • Assists with budgeting process and audit fieldwork for external audits
  • Provide advanced, technical grants accounting support work for Program Managers
  • Monitor, analyze and maintain financial transactions and accounting for a wide variety of programs funded by Federal, state and local grants.
  • Track revenues and expenditures by funding source.
  • Reconcile grant and program financial statements to the federal and county financial records by fund which may include many different grants.
  • Review data, identify errors through analysis, research, and interpretation of data, and provide recommendations to VP of Finance and/or Program Manager in determining corrective action.
  • Work closely with department staff, and Federal, state and local governmental agencies.
  • Bill on contract awards and prepares the necessary billing documents, as appropriate.
  • Track due dates and prepare reports for grantor agencies, verify invoices for allowable costs, and prepare monthly grant requests for reimbursement.
  • Maintain and document internal accounting controls as required by Federal, state and local grantors to ensure appropriate use of public funds. Must be familiar with OMB Circular A- 133 and related pronouncements.
  • Assist in development and implementation of administrative, program and subcontract budgets.
  • Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the supervisory team

Experience/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Knowledge and understanding of GAAP (General Accepted Accounting Principles)
  • At least 3 years of proven experience in the similar role
  • Experience with Fund Accounting preferred
  • United Way or similar nonprofit experience is preferred
  • Public accounting experience a plus
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PPP and Word for Windows
  • Strong proficiency in accounting software applications (Net Suite preferred) and experience with CRM software a plus
  • Self-starter with the ability to prioritize work and outline the steps necessary to complete a project
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adapt readily to changes
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to handle several on-going projects
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to set and meet deadlines
  • Excellent research and analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in both a remote and office environment
  • Strong listening, written and verbal communication skills
  • A clear understanding of the importance of confidentiality
