JOB OVERVIEW:
Support and consistently reinforce the Mission and Core Values of M&D Mechanical
Contractors, Inc. A pipefitter apprentice is skilled in the design, fabrication, installation,
maintenance, and repair of industrial and commercial carbon steel or stainless-steel piping
systems. They read blueprints and specifications to accurately assemble and install systems that
transport substances such as water, steam, chemicals, and fuel. Pipefitter apprentice can assist
in testing of the installed systems for integrity and safety, ensuring they adhere to regulatory
standards.MUST BE ENROLLED IN THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AS A PIPEFITTER APPRENTICE.IF NOT ALREADY ENROLLED, CANDIDATE MUST BE ENROLLED IN NACTF THOUGH M&D. CLASSES BEGIN 8/5, 4-YEAR PROGRAM.FUNCTIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :A pipefitter apprentice assists in the installation, assembly, fabrication, maintenance, and repair
of piping systems. These systems might transport water, steam, chemicals, and fuel in industrial
and commercial environments.
  • System Analysis: Evaluating blueprints, plans, and specifications to understand the piping
requirements of a particular project.
  • Measurement & Cutting: Measuring, cutting, threading, and preparation of pipes to the
required size, shape and condition to perform welding.
  • Installation: Assembling and installing piping systems according to specifications.
  • Testing: Testing installed systems to ensure they function properly, using testing equipment
like hydrostatic, leak, high pressure, x-ray testing equipment.
  • Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshooting and repairing faulty systems and equipment.
  • Safety: Adhering to safety regulations and standards, ensuring the safety of oneself and
others on the job site.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with other tradespeople, such as welders, plumbers, and
contractors.
  • Documentation: Assist with keeping records of work performed, materials used, and other
relevant data.JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:
  • Pipe Selection: Selecting the type and size of pipe required based on the direction of the
pipefitter.
  • Requirements: Reads drawing including symbols and callouts. General knowledge of
building codes and regulations.
  • Equipment Use: Utilizing specific tools like lifts, pipe benders, torches, and cutting saws with
supervision of the pipefitter.
  • Flange Installation: Attaching pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures using brackets, clamps,
or hangers.
  • Fittings: Securing pipes using various fittings like elbows, unions, and tees.
  • Pipe Preparation: Measuring, cleaning, grinding, beveling, squaring pipe ends with minimal
rework
  • System Flush: Cleaning and flushing the system after installation to remove any debris or
contaminants.
  • Pressure Testing: Ensuring pipes are leak-proof and can withstand the necessary pressures
by filling them with liquid or air under pressure.
  • Pipe Bending: Using manual or hydraulic benders to achieve the desired angles without
compromising the pipe's structural integrity.
  • Material Knowledge: Recognizing the appropriate materials to use for specific applications,
such as understanding which metals are resistant to certain chemicals per drawing,
specification, or regulation.QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
  • Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent, or trade school
  • Previous pipe fabrication experience desirable
  • Enrolled in M&D apprentice program
  • State certified Gas Fitter Apprentice Card
  • Required to read and write English, follow verbal instructions, and use simple math
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic understanding of pipe (carbon and stainless steel) systems and components
  • Ability to read and comprehend project drawings components
  • Must be detail oriented and organized
  • Must be able to manage and prioritize multiple task and schedule requirements
  • Strong TEAM player
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: reaching in all directions, handling and
manipulating objects and machines; lifting from ground level, waist lever, and/or overhead;
carrying objects, etc.; standing; sitting; walking; bending; seeing with or without correction;
hearing with or without correction; following set procedures and standards; applying basic
mathematical skills; repeating tasks of short duration; following oral and/or written directions;
reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: following set procedures and standards;

understanding differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures, and objects; picturing
and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or

to recognize and report safety hazards.WORK ENVIROMENT FACTORS:
  • Location: industrial construction sites and/or office environment
  • Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways
  • Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately indoor climate; various noise
