Operations Manager - Landscape Installation
Job DescriptionThe Operations Manager (OM-I) serves as the linchpin of field operations at Landscapes Unlimited. As a pivotal member of the management team, the OM-I collaborates closely with the Design/Build Manager (DBM) to steer both field operations and the developmental trajectory of the Installation Division. This role demands a hands-on approach to drive productivity, mentor personnel, and ensure operational excellence. Initially, the position entails an estimated 80/20 split between labor and management responsibilities, transitioning to a 60/40 split as the OM-I fully integrates into the role.Key Responsibilities1. Field Management
  • Project Scheduling: Collaborate with the DBM on daily and weekly basis to assess project status and schedule. Conduct morning and evening meetings to review daily events, plan future activities, address service requirements, and ensure quality control. Promptly communicate site issues or scope changes to the DBM for timely resolution.
  • Site Reviews: Conduct comprehensive project reviews with the DBM to evaluate ongoing projects, anticipate future tasks, address service needs, and uphold quality standards. Familiarize yourself with project specifics, including location, scope, construction details, client preferences, and design intent, to devise efficient execution plans.
  • Crew Direction: Lead by example to motivate and manage the team effectively. Maintain organizational prowess and forward-thinking to optimize workflow. Provide clear direction to the crew, monitor work progress attentively, and rectify any shortcomings or inefficiencies promptly.
  • Plant Knowledge: Possess a strong understanding of plant material usage and growth patterns. Identify common trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and turf, and troubleshoot any related issues such as diseases or decline.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Proficiently read and interpret blueprints to scale plantings and hardscapes accurately. Visualize design intents to facilitate on-site adjustments as necessary.
  • Material Acquisition: Coordinate with local suppliers to ensure timely procurement of plant and hardscape materials, preventing inventory shortages that could disrupt installation operations. Assist the DBM in managing shop inventory and sourcing materials from out-of-state suppliers, prioritizing product quality and design alignment with project needs and budget.
  • Irrigation Management: Possess a working knowledge of irrigation systems, capable of adjusting clocks, cleaning and adjusting heads, and performing basic repairs on broken pipes.
  • Subcontractor Coordination: Coordinate with various contractors, including irrigation, hydroseeding, asphalt, turf applicators, tree services, and builders, to maintain smooth project schedules.
2. Equipment and Materials Management
  • Vehicles: Oversee the operation and maintenance of installation trucks and trailers, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Equipment: Manage the operation and maintenance of installation equipment, including but not limited to bobcats, tillers, mason saws, plate compactors, chainsaws, and hand tools.
  • Materials: Ensure a sufficient supply of non-plant materials such as burlap, twine, brick edging, drain tile, PVC sleeve materials, and timber products for use in operations.
3. Personnel Management
  • Company Image: Uphold LU's standards of professionalism and excellence by enforcing company policies regarding attire, behavior, equipment usage, and site organization.
  • Hiring: Collaborate with the DBM to recruit and onboard skilled field technicians through various channels, including classified ads and interviews.
  • Training: Facilitate ongoing training for all installation associates to ensure adherence to LU's processes and standards. Provide hands-on guidance and consistent follow-up to foster skill development and operational excellence.
  • PTO Log: Maintain accurate records of personnel time off, documenting details of each occurrence.
  • Communications: Foster effective communication with all LU associates, including those with limited English proficiency.
  • Personnel Reviews: Conduct year-end skills reviews for all personnel under your supervision, evaluating personal growth, development, and future directions in alignment with LU's goals.
What You'll Bring to the Team
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with installing residential landscaping
  • Knowledge of natural stone, paver's, brick, blue-stone patios, walks, and retaining walls
  • Knowledge of ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennial plant materials
  • Basic understanding of irrigation systems and repairs
  • Valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record per Company policy
  • Knowledge of essential job functions and responsibilities

  • Pass all drug and alcohol screens as required by Company policy and, if applicable, required by DOT regulations
