Working Title CARC Research Computing Facilitator
Position Grade 13
Position SummaryThe Research Computing Facilitation Specialist is a key member of the Systems Team at the UNM Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), focusing on supporting the research computing needs of the University's faculty, staff, and student researchers. This position will play a leading role in facilitating, promoting, and aiding the adoption of scalable research computing solutions by UNM researchers. The primary responsibility of this position is to work with a wide range of researchers through support requests (e.g. email, ticketing systems, chats) and in-person consultations to meet their diverse computing needs, primarily on Linux-based computing platforms.Duties include:
  • Working with UNM researchers and senior research computing personnel to identify computing needs and design and implement system configurations and/or software setups to meet researchers' computing needs
  • Assisting researchers by installing and maintaining off-the-shelf and custom software packages, including helping researchers design, debug, and complex research workflows
  • Installing and maintaining Linux workstations, servers, and virtual machine systems using both in-person and remote administration tools
  • Managing and installing programming languages, environments, and packages commonly used for research computing such as Python, R, and C/C++
  • Managing licensing support, license servers, and associated compliance issues related to research software and data
  • Helping research computing user support personnel develop and offer training on the use of Linux research computing systems and software
  • Collaborating with UNM Information Security personnel to maintain the integrity of research cyberinfrastructure
The successful candidate will have:
  • General understanding of computer systems configurations
  • Experience compiling and installing Linux software and packages
  • Ability to build and network Linux servers
  • Ability to execute tasks within specific and well-defined projects
  • Experience programming in a high-level language such as C, C++, Java, or Fortran
  • Working knowledge of one or more scripting languages such as bash, Perl, or Python

Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree; at least 1 year of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing and implementing research software and/or workflows
  • Experience performing or supporting research in a science or engineering discipline, especially in physics, math, or quantitative Earth and environmental science fields
  • Experience integrating data from field or laboratory sensors/instruments into computational workflows
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with network security procedures and protocols
  • Experience working with or identifying potential controlled unclassified information (CUI), including but not limited to export controlled, HIPAA, or FERPA data
