The Business Manager assumes responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and monitoring all aspects of the financial accounting, payroll, financial reporting/systems, cash management and other finance related functions for all funds. She/He performs accounting functions and maintains accounting records for school district funds. She/He prepares or generates various financial statements and reports as assigned.Major Responsibilities:
- Provide support for district fiscal functions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and district policy utilizing sound internal controls of accounting functions for all district funds.
- Monitor all district budgets in a collaborative approach with departmental leadership
- General administration of accounting for all district funds including internal controls
- Meet with Director of Finance and Director of Grants monthly to review grant budgets and expenditures.
- Oversee preparation of district year-end financial statements and coordinate the annual financial audit report.
- Assists in financial budgeting and reporting for all State, Federal, and local programs and grants.
- Collaboratively work with Executive Director of Business and Finance in the development the original and amendment of all district budgets.
- Assist Director of Finance in preparation of long-term planning for the district’s financial future.
- Prepare, analyze, and report financial information for administrative level decision-making.
- Monitor and analyze cash flow daily.
- May ensure the timely monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts.
- Participate with county and state organizations to stay abreast of school finance reform and other district-related issues.
- Collaboratively coordinate with all departments and buildings regularly on budget and communications.
- Communicate and interpret analytical financial and operational information including monthly budget-to-actual reports.
- Assist with communication and monitoring of board business policies.
- Assists with developing written office procedures for the department.
- Provide training and manage access to financial accounting system software for staff.
- Oversee property tax levy, collections, and reconcilement at year end.
- Maintain fixed asset records and prepare year-end fixed asset schedule.
- Responsible for all district receivables
- Oversee and process district credit card system.
- Meet deadlines and adhere to specific time constraints.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Michigan School Business Officials’ (MSBO) Chief Financial Officer Certification or willingness to obtain
- Three to five years of experience in Accounting or Finance required, as well as previous experience in a school environment preferred.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Excellent communication, analytical, and computer skills required
- Knowledge of federal, state, local and Board of Education laws, policies, regulations and procedures relating to financial management.
- Knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of policies and operational needs.
