The aim of this project is to study woodland dynamics in NW Europe during the last 2500 years through the analysis of archaeological remains of charcoal kilns.
This will be done based on the taxonomic identification of charcoal preserved in ancient charcoal kilns, combined with the spatial and chronological analysis of these archaeological features. This will result in a reconstruction of the past occurrence, composition and dynamics of woodlands in different regions in NW Europe over the last 2500 years. Finally, the role of human impact on these different elements of woodland dynamics will be studied.
The job includes fieldwork and participation to international workshops and scientific conferences. The ultimate goal of your research is to obtain a doctoral degree.Job profile
  • You hold a Master's degree in Archaeology, Bio-Engineering Sciences, Biology, Geography, Geology or similar.
  • You are capable of conducting field and laboratory work (mostly microscopy).
  • You have a (European) driving license or are willing to obtain this during the first project year.
  • You are proficient in English, both written and spoken, and preferably also Dutch.
  • You have knowledge of geographic information systems and statistical analysis.
  • You preferably have knowledge of botany and woodland ecology.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
  • We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial period of 12 months, which - after a positive evaluation, will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.
  • Your contract will start on October 1, 2024 at the earliest.
  • The fellowship amount is 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances. The individual fellowship amount is determined by the Department of Personnel and Organization based on family status and seniority. A grant that meets the conditions and criteria of the regulations for doctoral fellowships is considered free of personal income tax.
