- Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc.
- Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment.
- Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag, or spatter.
- Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc. using various hand and power tools.
- Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank cars when required.
- Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.
- Have a High School Diploma or GED, or be willing to complete an on-site basic skills assessment
- Must have basic welding experience; 1 year of professional welding experience is preferred.
- Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow documents such as safety rules, work orders, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly instructions.
- Have analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- Safety and quality focused.
- Be available to work any shift.
- Be dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime, as allowed per the union contract. Must be able to pass a 60-day probation period with limited absenteeism, and safety and performance issues.
- Will have to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Will perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
- Will be working around hot work and fumes common to welding and body repair.
- May work in confined spaces and must be able to enter and fit through an 18-to-20-inch manway opening.
- May work from heights exceeding 4 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection.
- Close mental and visual attention required, coordinating manual dexterity with mental and visual attention for sustained periods of time.
- Great union wages starting at $25/hour, with shift differential premium ($2.00/hr for 2nd shift & $1.00/hr for 3rd shift)
