The Senior Academic Adviser provides advising, programs, and services to support first-year Engineering Undeclared students who are clarifying their academic interests and goals and preparing for entry into majors. Additionally, this position will support transfer student outreach, recruitment, & successful transition to the College. Important aspects of the work include developmental, learning-centered advising, strong interpersonal skills, collaboration, and attention to detail. Collaboration with current students and prospective transfer students, university staff, various academic and administrative units on campus, and community colleges will be required.The Engineering Advising & Student Engagement (EASE) Center provides student programming and advising for a population of roughly 1,100 first-year undergraduate Engineering Undeclared students. The mission of the EASE team is to create opportunities for engineering exploration, foster an intentional, inclusive community, and empower students to maximize their UW experience.As educators, advisers partner with the campus community to cultivate our students' intellectual development. As guides and advocates, advisers collaborate with students to craft a transformative educational experience so that they may become informed, articulate, and thoughtful students at the university and citizens of the world. Our team is committed to continuous learning and growth both for ourselves and our students and we strive to create and maintain a working and learning environment that is inclusive, equitable, and welcoming.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Undeclared Academic Advising (65%)
  • Serve as assigned academic adviser for a caseload of around 300 Engineering Undeclared students. Provide one-on-one developmental advising that includes helping students:
- Make connections between their strengths, interests, and values with the university curriculum.
- Develop a sense of purpose in their undergraduate education.
- Seek out clubs, internships, undergraduate research opportunities, and personal development.
- Overcome difficulties that hinder their academic performance.
- Integrate their education and career plans.
- Develop transferable, lifelong skills (i.e., critical thinking, communication, reflection).
- Interpret departmental, College and University requirements.
- Navigate the complexity of a large institution.
  • Provide regular, high volume drop-in advising hours accessible to all ENGRUD students.
  • Perform outreach and strengths-based advising to students on advising caseload who are academically at risk and/or are not meeting continuation requirements.
  • Connect with other campus units (Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, College of Engineering departmental advising, Undergraduate Academic Affairs Academic Advising, University Registrar, First Year Programs, Undergraduate Admissions, etc.) as necessary to provide holistic advising services to Engineering Undeclared students.
Administrative and Programmatic Responsibilities (15%)
  • Collaborate with Advancement colleagues to plan, market, and execute Engineering Exploration Night, the EASE team's second-largest annual signature event.
  • Review and assess students' Placement Request Forms to support the placement process of Engineering Undeclared students into engineering majors.
  • Support development and implementation of workshops around topics such as registration and placement preparation.
  • Assist in the delivery of the college's major programs such as Admitted Student Day, Advising & Orientation, Engineering Launch, etc.
Prospective Transfer Student Advising (15%)
  • Support the prospective transfer student population (TR Thursday) by providing advising appointments with the overall goal of facilitating an efficient transfer for community college pre-engineering students.
  • Collaborate with the Recruitment & Youth Engagement Program Manager to support outreach and yield efforts for prospective community college transfer students.
  • Collaborate with departmental advisers to support transfer students' transition into the College of Engineering.
Support Student Academic Services Team (5%)
  • Contribute to the process of updating engineering major sample four-year plans annually.
  • Support Emerging Leaders in Engineering application review in winter quarter.
  • Assist with supporting front desk employees on issues relating to triaging email, telephone, and walk-in inquiries. Provide backup support to the engradv email account.
  • Communicate with College of Engineering IT and web development teams to make updates as needed to MyENGRUD and CoE websites.
  • Participate regularly in professional development activities to support learning, growth, and best practices.
  • Perform duties as assigned to support the broader goals of the Student Academic Services team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Science, Engineering, or Humanities Discipline.
  • Two-three years of student-facing work such as advising, student counseling, or teaching experience.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including public speaking and ability to articulate ideas clearly.
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement, set priorities, and initiate solutions as a strong independent contributor and collaborative team member.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills including effectively managing various tasks in the context of a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail, accuracy, and quality results.
  • Ability to provide an empathetic, yet professional and efficient approach to working with students from diverse backgrounds and those with a spectrum of personal and academic challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully organize, plan, and execute small and large-scale projects and events.
  • Commitment to continual learning and self-improvement.
  • Flexibility and availability for working weekday evening and/or weekend events.
  • Frequency is anticipated to be around 1-2 times a quarter.

  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
