The primary mission is to increase the rate at which participants complete their secondary school education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. The UB program provides academic, co- and extracurricular activities during the academic year and the summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.ABOUT UB SUMMER ACADEMYThe UB Summer Academy is a six-week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences. The Summer Academy serves approximately 40 students from the Lynn Public Schools. This year's Summer Academy includes a four-week, day program at North Shore Community College's Lynn Campus and a two- week residential program at Umass Amherst. The program runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM during the non-residential component and Sunday evening through Saturday afternoon during the residential component. The overarching theme for this year's Summer Academy is, So...What do we do now?GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:The Summer Instructors are responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging, empowering project-based courses as part of our 6-week summer program. Positions available for the following subject:Science: Natural Science-Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and/or Computer ScienceDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Design a curriculum that matches and supports Upward Bound's teaching and learning goals, yearly theme and is responsive to Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks
  • Implement a virtual assessment/evaluation system for determining student success on assignments, culminating projects, class participation and the course as a whole
  • Identify virtual educational reference materials (books, articles, supplies, etc.) to be utilized during the course
  • Incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, student-centered learning, and multicultural perspectives
  • Focus on one overarching project that guides the content and skills you want students to learn and apply to be presented on the last day of the summer program
  • Collaborate with Academic Coordinator to maximize academic benefits for each individual student
  • Instructors also engage in non-instructional virtual activities including weekly meetings, facilitated study sessions, and co-curricular activities
Requirements:
  • B.A. or B.S. in the related field(s) required
  • Familiarity with assessment techniques in the subject area(s)
  • Teaching experience, preferably with urban youth
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in the related field(s) www.doe.mass.edu/candi/commoncore/
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a team player
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish, French, Khmer) preferred
  • Demonstrated sensitivity towards and passion and commitment to working with students and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different levels of academic preparation, or/and varying physical and learning abilities-prior experience preferred
  • Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
Additional Information:SALARY: Total earnings for this position is $4,160 at $32/hr. plus room and board and transportation to/from during the residential portion of the program.STARTING DATE: Tuesday, June 25, 2024EMPLOYMENT DATES: Class and Study Session hours between 8:30am - 4:00pm while at NSCC
  • June 25 and June 26: Staff training and prep at NSCC's Lynn Campus
  • June 27 - July 19: Program meets at NSCC's Lynn Campus (no class July 4 & 5)
  • July 20- August 3: Program meets at UMass Amherst (no class August 1-2)
