Offer DescriptionThe Faculty of Science, Department of Geography and Geology, at the University of Turku invites applications for contract-based, fixed term university researcher positions for 4 years. Employment starts on as agreed during year 2024.The positions are located within the flagship research project "Digital Waters" at the Department of Geography and Geology,Job descriptionThe selected candidates will:
  • Conducts and guides scientific research: It is expected that the candidate will collaborate within research group and acquire domestic and international research funding.
  • Provides research-based teaching: Additionally, the candidate is expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and contribute to their development.
  • Supervise or co-supervise theses at all academic levels.
  • Keeps abreast of scientific developments.
  • Engages in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.
The positions encompass hydroinformatics, fluvial geomorphology, big data analyses and statistics in hydrology, with a primary focus on new digital measurement methods and their application in digital twin of river basin.The selected candidates will supervise PhD researchers and MSc students and provide teaching, particularly in the flagship doctoral pilot (comprising 60 doctoral researchers in the consortium, with 16 doctoral researchers at the University of Turku) and engage in international cutting-edge research as part of the Digital Waters research community.Who we are looking forRequirementsWe are seeking a highly motivated person with:
  • PhD degree and 4-6 years postdoctoral research in geography, geology, water engineering, forestry or a relevant subject.
  • proficiency in fluvial geomorphology, biogeography, geoinformatics, big data analyses, statistics or remote sensing
  • R command line with a merit in learning other programming languages such as Python (merit).
  • Fieldwork and field measuring skills are a valuable asset but not mandatory.
Additionally, the selected candidates are expected to be proficient in fluvial geomorphology, biogeography, geoinformatics, big data analyses, statistics or remote sensing as part of hydrological research and societal applications. Research achievements, especially in these areas, demonstrated through publications, are highly valued. The applicants are expected to have good writing and communication skills in English. , , , * Working culture:Salary and trial periodThe salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is 6 - 7 (3747,44-4320,23€). In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid.
