Please visitThe Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions Vice Presidency (EFI) is one the World Bank Group's four Practice Groups. EFI's mandate is “Growth, Finance, and Institutions for all.” Our approach is to leverage public and private sector expertise, to support a data-driven reform agenda. EFI is composed of four Global Practices (GPs):
  • Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation (FCI) and Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment (MTI) - country economists, macro, fiscal economists and financial, private sector expertise and supporting structural reforms.
  • Governance GP - public sector, financial management and procurement expertise-supporting institutional and governance reforms, institutional strengthening, combating corruption and providing fiduciary support to all Bank operations.
  • Poverty and Equity GP - micro-economists, labor and development economists-building the evidence base, providing advice and operational support to ensure country policies and WBG interventions are inclusive.
  • Economic Multilateral Affairs department (EMEDR) - The department has four functions: (i) manage and prioritize corporate-wide global multilateral relationships; (ii) engage with GPS/CCSAs, Regions, Finance, DEC, IFC, and MIGA to develop a work program and objectives that reflect the strengths of the WBG; (iii) facilitate the deployment of technical expertise where needed; and (iv) amplify and give visibility to the technical work and engagements led by WBG units in thematic/technical multilateral fora and global partnerships.
EFI supports clients in advancing evidence-based structural reforms to build the foundations for inclusive and sustainable growth. The three ways we achieve this are through: (i) multi-sectoral structural reforms for jobs and growth - legal, regulatory, policy and institutional reforms across all sectors and effective resource management; (ii) evidence based targeted policies to reduce poverty, increase shared prosperity and resilience; and (iii) effective resource mobilization - domestic resource mobilization, through good fiscal policies, the development of domestic banking sector and local capital markets, FDI (and portfolio flows), and development finance.EFI is seeking a Senior Economist to join the EFI Economic Multilateral Affairs unit.Responsibilities:The Senior Economist will be responsible to work with EMEDR Director, EFI Global Directors, Practice Managers and global teams, as well as with other VPUs and senior management teams across the Bank Group to support EMEDR activities.Specific roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Represent the WBG in multilateral economic platforms, including the G7/G20, MDBs, OECD and APEC and support senior management in those engagements.
  • Craft briefing materials for senior management in coordination with WBG colleagues in GPs and Regions and on political, economic, and multilateral issues.
  • Contribute to the design and development of the Knowledge Products in coordination with other Bank Group units to contribute to the G7/G20, and other international economic platforms.
  • In coordination with colleagues across the institution, support the crafting of key positioning speeches or presentations for senior leadership, including by identifying additional relevant internal and external research, analysis and trends.
  • Build and support relationships with GPs and Regions to ensure a strategic and coordinated approach and that corporate messaging and multilateral deliverables are aligned with WBG priorities.
  • Support planning, coordination, and implementation of outreach activities of the WBG, contributing to a continuous dialogue across relevant multilateral constituencies.
  • Monitor global political and economic trends and developments; gather and analyze information and identify potential opportunities for the WBG, as well as risks to the WBG's reputation.
  • Build and support partnerships with MDBs, multilateral institutions, G20/G7 members (especially their current and upcoming presidencies), related fora and global stakeholders.
  • Support preparations for high-level meetings, events, and trips and, participate in and provide read-outs from various multilateral events/meetings.
  • As needed, support the EMEDR director with other ad hoc projects or tasks.
Selection Criteria
  • A Master's degree in economics or related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD in economics or related field is preferred.
  • Strong analytical economic and/or finance background especially on issues related to the global economy, debt, and financing for development issues.
  • Strong political judgment, diplomacy skills and sensitivity to the WBG's internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to effectively interact with internal and external clients at all levels and in a multicultural environment. Track record of managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively interact with finance ministries staff on main global economic challenges and key corporate priorities.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact and discretion, including in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex issues and to communicate to others in a clear and concise way.
  • Knowledge of the WBG and the issues currently facing the international development and multilateral arena; solid understanding of or prior experience with EMEDR's areas of responsibilities a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, proven ability to perform multiple tasks, prioritize deliverables and work under pressure and tight deadlines with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Ability to quickly learn, adapt, and be innovative as new challenges arise. Demonstrated high initiative, drive for results, flexibility, and high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and in diverse teams.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and command of English.
  • Ability to work flexibly, creatively, and to multitask as the need arises. High degree of self-motivation, positive attitude, commitment, and drive;
