Summary of DutiesThurston County Public Works is recruiting for a Senior Civil Engineer to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Construction Engineering team. The successful candidate will perform a full range of senior level professional civil engineering assignments in both the field and office. Key responsibilities include planning and managing a wide variety of civil engineering projects, overseeing and/or providing the design and review of complex plans, and supervising the work of assigned engineering support and professional engineering staff.Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Plans, organizes and supervises the work of assigned staff. Recommends selection, provides orientation and training, evaluates performance, and recommends disciplinary action.
  • Performs research, engineering analysis, calculations and utilizes computer engineering programs to solve the most complex civil engineering problems.
  • Prepares and presents information for community groups and citizens on projects during public informational meetings.
  • Develops project budgets and assists in the preparation of annual operating budget. Approves invoices and monitors expenditures.
  • Coordinates and supervises contract administration.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
  • Four years of progressively responsible technical civil engineering experience, with at least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to use computers and related software for construction, design and other civil engineering work.
  • Possession of Professional Engineer License recognized by the State of Washington (Note: no substitution will be allowed for the PE Certification requirement).
  • Washington State Driver's License.
Desired Skills
  • Understand the principals and procedures of life cycle cost benefit analysis on road networks for project selection.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas or project issues in a clear, comprehensive, effective and professional manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience with leading a civil engineering project from inception through construction, including specification writing, bidding, construction management, record of materials, change orders and record keeping.
  • Ability to perform technical research regarding pavement management treatments to provide the most cost-effective solutions.
  • Principles, procedures, and practices of contract administration and construction management process.
  • Experience with Pavement Management and managing large/complex asset systems.
