The EXCEL Student Learning Support department exists to provide efficacious, timely, and intentional individual and group study spaces where CCD students can be supported in learning and collaboration. The EXCEL Zone provides robust 1:1, group, and embedded tutoring support in Math, Writing, ELL, and Digital Literacy through in-person and remote tutoring with a commitment to cultivating self-reliant learners.Duties and ResponsibilitiesWRITING/ELL TUTORING
Writing/ELL tutoring works with students on a variety of writing assignments. Students may be currently enrolled in any class that includes writing assignments. Assignments include-but are not limited to-grammar exercises, reading comprehension pronunciation practice, paragraph/essay/research writing, citation, drafting, revision, and editing. Tutoring includes one-on-one and small group work with students, class visits, and multiple delivery modes (face-to-face, WebEx, and drop-off submission)TIME COMMITMENT
Tutoring hours are available for morning, afternoon, and evening shifts, Monday through Friday. Schedules are typically set for the semester, and tutoring services and hours are not scheduled during times that classes are not in session. Mandatory tutor trainings are held prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters and are required before tutors begin work each semester. Tutors are also expected to attend team meetings throughout the semester and to complete any required trainings as scheduled.TUTORING DUTIES
  • Effectively assist students in learning concepts related to writing in a variety of courses.
  • Develop students' critical thinking skills through modeling and guided work.
  • Assist students with issues related to computer based assignments and navigate computer software and websites.
  • Be approachable, and communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively, greeting and interacting with students in a positive and helpful manner.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment, and remain composed in tense situations.
  • Foster the ability for students to engage with their work independently.
  • Successfully engage one-on-one with underrepresented student populations-including, but not limited to-the following: students of color; first generation students; low income students and students experiencing homelessness; students with differing learning styles and levels of English fluency; students with varying abilities and neurological differences; students of varying gender identities.
  • Document all tutoring sessions as instructed..
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT
  • Attend professional development to improve tutoring skills.
  • Attend Excel Tutoring meetings.
  • Attend department or center meetings as required.
QualificationsEducation: (required/minimum)
  • Associates or higher in the tutoring subject (transcripts will be requested for verification).
Experience: (required/minimum)
  • Experience or knowledge of tutoring students in an educational setting, preferably at an institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (required/minimum)
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in order to interact with diverse constituents and to provide high quality support and high levels of customer service to students.
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
  • Adept with use of MS Office Suite and other related or similar software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and within a team.
  • Ability to remain composed under stress.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with a wide range of populations including students, staff, and faculty.
Licensure/Certification: N/AEquipment Used:
  • Computers, printers, copy machines, other office equipment
Other Considerations: Some early morning, evening, and weekend work will be required.Supplemental InformationExperience: (preferred)
  • Teaching experience at a community college.
  • Experience working in an urban minority-majority college.

  • Knowledge of a second language.
