- Respond promptly to medical and/or first aid emergencies within the camp/program premises or at a neighboring camp/program facility.
- Assess and provide immediate care to youth participants and/or staff members in case of injuries, illnesses, or any medical incidents.
- Provide input into accident prevention, including: facilities, equipment, supervision, activities, and/or other environmental factors.
- Assist with the development and implementation of emergency action and disaster plans (EAPs) for assigned camp/program facility.
- Direct or assist staff members in the implementation of emergency medical care procedures, as needed.
- Notify Camp Leads and/or Youth Program Coordinator regarding status of youth participants and/or staff members receiving treatment.
- Make recommendations on sending youth participants and/or staff members home or transporting them to another health care facility.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all youth participants and staff members using camp/program registration system.
- Document accidents, incidents, and/or any health-related issues as appropriate.
- Process all Accident Reports, Incidents Reports, and/or Child Abuse/Neglect (CANRA) forms turned in by staff members.
- Refer program and administrative questions to the appropriate supervisor.
- Work collaboratively with the Camp Leads and Youth Programs Coordinator in communicating to parents/guardians, EMS personnel, and/or health care personnel any medical conditions or health issues of youth participants and staff members.
- Make recommendations on sending youth participants and staff members home or transporting them to another health care facility.
- Ensure staff members adhere to and understand all stated policies and procedures of the Recreation & Wellbeing Department, while providing a safe, fun, and educational experience for all youth participants.
- Provide training, support, and coaching to staff members (Camp Leads, Asst. Leads, Group Leaders/Instructors, and/or Behavioral Interventionists) who may be responsible for dispensing medications and/or providing emergency first aid to youth participants.
- Develop, interpret, implement, evaluate, and document a plan of care for youth participants and staff members consistent with UC Berkeley's campus policies, procedures, and guidelines, as needed.
- Promote preventive health practices and provide information on maintaining a safe and healthy camp/program environment.
- Foster a culture of well-being by encouraging healthy lifestyle choices among youth participants and staff members.
- Demonstrate good judgment in a fast-paced camp/program environment.
- Maintain American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications during contract duration.
- Maintain current EMT certification and license during contract duration.
- Accept constructive feedback and make any necessary corrections.
- Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity in all interactions with youth participants, staff members, and parents/guardians.
- Follow all camp/program policies and procedures stated in the Department of Recreation & Wellbeing's Employee Handbook, including wearing required staff uniform and following agreed upon work schedule.
- Fill in for camp/program staff, as needed.
- Maintain a supportive environment for all youth participants and staff members.
- Complete all tasks in a timely manner as specified or requested by the supervisor.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks as requested by the supervisor.
- At least one year of experience working as a certified/licensed EMT.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Client-service minded and customer service-focused.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in the use of basic computer applications, specifically Google Workspace.
- High school diploma and/or equivalent certification, experience, and/or training.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- At least one year of previous experience working with youth in a recreational setting or equivalent experience.
- Proficient knowledge of youth programs and program structures.
- Knowledge of and/or ability to campus policies and procedures.
- Current NREMT certification and license, or equivalent.
- Some completion towards an Associate Degree and/or Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
- This is a 3-month, 30%, part-time (12 hours per week), contract position that is not eligible for UC benefits.
- This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
- Part-time summer camp staff work a minimum of 3 months out of the year and then have the option to work an additional 3-6 months at youth camps during the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Part-time staff hired in the Fall, Winter, and Spring work a minimum of 6 months, with the option to be extended 3 additional months through the summer.
