- Health records and data
- Collects and reviews health information on all students, noting significant information, including allergies, medications, illnesses and health conditions.
- Maintains accurate, complete and confidential health records of students using the computerized Blackbaud school nurse program.
- Obtains and maintains student immunization records; prepares S.C. certificates of immunization when appropriate documentation is provided under the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with S.C. Department of Health and Environmental control (DHEC).
- Is responsible for the control of communicable diseases and reporting diseases to appropriate health agencies. Utilizes the S.C. DHEC childcare and school age children exclusion list to determine when a child needs to be excluded from school.
- Maintains confidentiality of personally identifiable data on students and staff.
- Monitor/treat student health concerns
- Uses nursing best practices in the assessment, intervention, planning, and evaluation of student health.
- Triage, monitors, evaluates, and treats physical/mental conditions of students; refers health concerns to parents for as appropriate.
- Communicates with parents concerning the health of their child(ren); provides instruction for proper medical care.
- Administers prescription and non-prescription medications as directed by the physician and parent, in compliance with Southside Christian policy, and follows protocols for emergency medication.
- Uses various tools and equipment, such as AED, stethoscope, otoscope, thermometer, first aid supplies, CPR Shield, etc.
- Health screenings
- Conducts vision screening as requested by teacher, student and/or parents.
- Conducts individual head lice screenings on an as needed basis and notifies parents according to DHEC guidelines.
- Emergency care for staff
- Triage and treats medical/health conditions of staff as needed on an emergency basis.
- Assist with the monitoring of staff health concerns, as requested.
- Staff training and preparation
- Conducts staff training to promote awareness of illness and disease symptoms; trains staff on use of EpiPen administration, as well as other rescue/emergency type medications.
- Conducts annual Bloodborne Pathogen training program, CPR, AED, and First Aid training for faculty.
- Supervise supplying and distribution of first aid kits/ 911 packets to classrooms, offices, etc.
- Maintains a professional health room environment
- Prepares the health room for opening each school year; evaluates use and condition of equipment, furniture, and room. Advises director of needed upgrades, replacement and improvements in keeping with an environment of excellence.
- Orders supplies and provide to areas as needed.
- Maintains controlled medicines in a secure area and keeps record of disbursement.
- Communicates with administrative staff regarding staffing in a timely manner, helps in the selection of paid, and volunteers for health room.
- Keeps abreast of developments and innovations in the profession.

- Have a commitment to the mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of Christian schooling as expressed by Southside Christian School demonstrated by their eligible children enrolled in Southside Christian School.
- Education & Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in nursing supplemented by two years of nursing experience is required and preferred, but an ADN will be considered.
- Current licensure to practice in the State of South Carolina.
- Possesses and maintains CPR certification.
- Able to work general school day hours from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
- Reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel; crouch or crawl; stand or sit for extended periods.
- Navigate swiftly throughout buildings, stairwells and outdoor terrains as needed in drills or actual emergency situations.
- Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 20 pounds; assisting with lifting or moving weights above that based on situation.
- Vision requires close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on telephone; hear through a stethoscope to discriminate sounds; hear cries for help; hear alarms on equipment and emergency signals; hear various phone and overhead intercom/pages; focus on one sound and ignore others.
- Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.
- Able to communicate in both verbal and written formats; and interact with students, parents, employees, and emergency personnel.
- Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
- Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
- The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
