Job SummaryThe Vascular (Ultrasound) Sonographer reports to the Supervisor/Technical Director and performs all required ultrasound and clinical evaluations at a technical level requiring only minimal direct supervision.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the vascular laboratory
  • Performs patient studies
  • Submits patient charge sheets
  • Prepares preliminary patient reports.
The Vascular Sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase their level of understanding and knowledge of the field of vascular disease and new procedures, as they evolve.This position will work up to 3 full days a week.

  • Satisfactory completion of a formal vascular technology training program (2-4 years) and Active Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Certification OR -
  • Graduate from a diagnostic ultrasound training program (2-4 years) and at least one (1) year of full time clinical experience in a vascular lab and Active Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Certification OR -
  • Two (2) years of college with emphasis on the biological sciences, and At least two (2) years full time experience in a dedicated clinical vascular laboratory and Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) eligible, or have an active Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) Certification.
  • Must be mature, responsible, self-motivated, and capable of working without direct supervision within guidelines set by supervisor; uses initiative and independent judgment when necessary.
  • Attend required hospital and department training and in-services.
  • Provide consistent and professional service to patients, physicians and other departments, and co-workers.
  • Ability to work on flexible schedules, on-call status etc.
  • Must be able to rotate throughout UCSF locations (Parnassus, Berkeley, Mission Bay and Mount Zion)
  • Adhere to HIPAA protocol at all times.
  • Active Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification by the:
  • ARDMS- The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography OR
  • CCI- Cardiovascular Credentialing International OR -
  • RVT Eligible. RVT Eligible employees must take an accredited RVT certification exam within 1 year of employment
Senior Sonographer (8966) -
  • Graduate from a diagnostic ultrasound training program (2-4 years)
  • Completed registration as a Registered Vascular Technician (RVT) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Three (3) years work experience as a Diagnostic Vascular Ultrasonographer in a dedicated vascular ultrasound lab with proven skill level to operate at a senior level.
  • Must be able to perform on-call responsibilities as assigned.
  • Must be able to rotate throughout UCSF locations (Parnassus, Berkeley, Mission Bay and Mount Zion)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in an acute care hospital-based vascular ultrasound laboratory.
  • Must be mature, responsible, self-motivated, and capable of working without direct supervision within guidelines set by supervisor; uses initiative and independent judgment when necessary.
  • Attend required hospital and department training and in-services.
  • Provide consistent and professional service to patients, physicians and other departments, and co-workers.
  • Adhere to HIPAA protocol at all times.
Preferred Qualifications
  • RVT, with additional registry in abdominal ultrasound
OR -
RVT, with additional 1-year experience in transcranial Doppler (TCD)License/Certification
  • Sonographer 8967 requirement: Active Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification by the
  • ARDMS- The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, OR
  • CCI- Cardiovascular Credentialing International OR -
  • RVT Eligible (for 8967 Sonographer level only). RVT Eligible employees must take an accredited RVT certification exam within 1 year of employment.
