SummaryResponsible for overall care, documentation, acquisitions and exhibitions of the Buddy Holly Center museum collections and assists with the City's Public Art collection in accordance with established museum management practices. Researches, organizes and implements a variety of music and fine art programs at the Buddy Holly Center. Assists Museums Director with fundraising and grants management for exhibitions and other educational programs.Essential Functions
  • Maintain the inventory records on municipal art collections, artifacts and history collections in accordance with established museum management principles and practices;
  • Coordinate and implement exhibitions, special events and educational programs related to Buddy Holly, music history and fine arts at the Buddy Holly Center;
  • Coordinate installation/deinstallation of exhibitions, inventories, condition reports, packing/unpacking of artifacts and other acquisitions or loaned items;
  • Perform a variety of curatorial administrative duties associated with city-wide policies and procedures such as personnel, accounting, purchasing, budgeting and safety;
  • Research, prepare, monitor and evaluate grants and fundraising strategies for programs in history, music and fine arts
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise part-time assistant coordinators;
  • Coordinate the organization and development of digital and archival research materials located at the Buddy Holly Center;
  • Oversee program for responding to public research requests on topics related to the mission of the Buddy Holly Center;
  • Make presentations and promote the department and events through media appearances and community groups;
  • Manage special projects for City of Lubbock museums;
  • Perform related duties as directed.
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Museum Studies or related field with an additional one year experience in a museum or closely related field and experience in grant writing; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:Must have at least one year experience with collections care and preservationMaster's degree in Museum Studies and/or Fine Arts, History is preferred
Exhibition experience preferredPhysical Exam RequiredKnowledge and AbilitiesKnowledge of:
  • Established museum management practices in the maintenance of a collection;
  • Music History and Fine Arts or Music & Fine Arts;
  • Established industry practices in evaluating additions to the collection;
  • Grant writing, project planning, and project coordination;
  • Overall museum operations.
Ability to:
  • Conceptualize, organize and implement exhibits;
  • Coordinate activities related to exhibits and education programs;
  • Supervise the work of others;
  • Recruit and train paid and volunteer assistants;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Keep records and prepare reports;
  • Develop and monitor budgets;
  • Effectively promote City of Lubbock museums and their programs;
  • Use a variety of small tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 75 pounds;
  • Frequently climb ladders, stairs and other inclined surfaces;
  • Frequently kneel and bend during shift;
  • Frequently push and pull objects;
  • Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially flex at the knees;
  • Frequently rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing.
