- Performs work assignment in accordance with acceptable nursing standards as delegated by the RN
- Provides medication pass to assigned residents as ordered by physician and as delegated by the RN
- Utilizes pharmacy, drug references and licensed nurses for medication administration questions
- Maintains awareness of actual and potential side effects, adverse reactions, contraindications, and purposes of medication
- May not administer meds by the following routes:
- Central lines
- IV
- IV lock
- Nasogastric tube
- injection (including SQ or IM) (note: some states may allow with a completed competency but it is the policy of this Center that only nurses will administer injections including insulin injections)
- Takes and records vital signs and indicated. (should demonstrate competency for BPs if manual cuff is utilized). Reports results to nurse.
- Keeps medication cart stocked and clean
- Gives/receives report at shift change
- Maintains assigned work area, (i.e. nurse station, med cart, medication room, etc.) resident care rooms, and treatment areas in a clean, organized and sanitary manner
- Monitors medication supply and informs the nurse if medication orders are needed
- Informs nurse of any noted change in condition
- Attends regularly conducted staff meetings as scheduled by the Director of Nursing
- Participates regularly in continuing education in-service programs
- Responsible for resident/patient medication pass during his/her respective shift
- Provides required patient observations and interventions
- Provides respiratory care, e.g. oxygen, nebulizer treatments as ordered by MD after completing competency with the RN
- Performs blood glucose testing as ordered by MD after completing competency with the RN
- Prepares and administers medications and documents medication administration in PCC.
- Completes all basic treatments and documents in PCC. Reports any changes noted to the charge nurse. Basic treatments include; ointments, creams, dressings to a stage 2 and below and any treatment that doesn't require an assessment.
- Administers any scheduled narcotics per MD order without the assist of the nurse. If any PRN (narcotic or non-narcotic) is requested by the resident, the nurse must be notified prior to administering the PRN for assessment purposes.
- If unable to give a medication, documents in the progress notes the reason for missed administration and reports to the charge nurse.
- Counts all controlled drugs with other nurse at shift change and notifies the DON / Unit Manager of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift (note the second person counting must be a nurse)
- Keeps medication room and medication cart locked according to regulations
- Complies with rules and regulations applicable to position and act in accordance with Center's Compliance Program
- Attends and participates in in-service training, performance improvement (“QAPI”) committees and other meetings as scheduled and directed
- Safety
- Knows and follows center rules
- Follows center dress and hygiene policies
- Demonstrates proper use of equipment. Reports equipment needs or repairs
- Follows center smoking policies
- Reports any incidents or accidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate center personnel
- Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to Supervisor
- Performs duties, which may include transportation of residents, as assigned in Center Disaster Plan
- Uses required protective equipment
- Follows infection control standards, policies and procedures
- Resident Rights
- Knows Resident Rights. Helps the residents/patients exercise and/or protect their rights
- Reports resident/patient complaints to management
- Maintains confidentiality of resident/patient information
- HIPAA
- Follows and adheres to Center's policies and procedures implementing HIPAA requirements for the privacy and security of protected health information
- Uses and/or discloses only minimum amount of Protected Health Information necessary to complete assigned tasks
- Reports all suspected violation of company's HIPAA policies or procedures to Center Privacy Designee
- Current State certification as a Medication Aide/TMA
- Must maintain state required continuing education/in-servicing and keep three years of records showing required in-servicing.
- Must maintain required hours of work (per state guidelines) and keep three years of records showing required hours of work
- Minimum 1-year nurse assistant experience
- Must have and maintain current CPR certification
- Experience in a fast-paced environment
- Post-acute care or health care experience preferred.
