Berwyn North School District 98 is located in Berwyn, Illinois. The district has three elementary schools and one middle school and serves more than 2,500 students in Pre-K through 8th grade. The Parent Patrol Program aims to provide a positive, secure, and safe environment for students as they travel to and from school and play during recess and dismissal. Parent Patrollers are trained in relationship-building skills, de-escalation strategies, and safety protocols to help foster safe commuting conditions for students.Accountability: School Building AdministratorsWage: $22 per hourDaily Hours:
  • 2 hours per day, Monday - Friday (excluding holidays, school breaks, and summer)
  • 7:45 am - 8:45 am and 2:40 pm - 3:30 pm
Training:
  • All Parent Patrollers must attend mandatory training before they begin working. The District will provide additional, ongoing support throughout the school year.
  • All Parent Patrollers will receive a vest and walkie-talkie.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum age requirement: 18 years
  • Fluency in Spanish, preferred
  • Must be able to work specific hours in the morning and afternoon
  • Ability to report to work on time, consistently
Experience:
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students and their families
  • Prior experience as a school crossing guard, preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Positive attitude and demeanor
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively; strong reading, writing, and speaking skills in both English and Spanish
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency situations
  • Ability to remain alert to and aware of environmental factors including moving vehicles and inclement weather
  • Ability to diffuse tense situations
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make quick decisions related to pedestrian traffic
  • Familiarity with traffic regulations about school and pedestrian crossings
  • Knowledge of traffic control signals used in directing traffic
  • Understands and respects the economic, cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the school community

  • Escorts pedestrians safely across the street
  • Signals traffic to stop/resume using hand and signal devices
  • Records incidents in writing to school-building administrators
  • Observes vehicles and pedestrians in the school area and reports suspicious activity
  • Discourages children from behaving unsafely near traffic intersections
Playground Monitor Duties
  • Oversees outside play and activities
  • Monitors student behavior to ensure a safe play environment
  • Direct movement of students entering and exiting the school building
  • Encourages a harmonious atmosphere; encourages peaceful resolution of conflicts
  • Provides feedback of student discipline observations to the school building administrators
  • Records incidents in writing to school-building administrators
  • Discourages children from behaving unsafely school grounds
Other
  • Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
  • Ability to work outdoors with exposure to inclement weather
  • Ability to work within a team environment
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods
  • Other duties as assigned
