- Surveillance - Uses a systematic approach to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies that are consistent with the organization's goals and objectives.
- Epidemiology - Applies epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification and benchmarking, to identify target populations, determine risk factors, design prevention and control strategies, analyze trends, and evaluate processes.
- Education - Serves as an educator and educational resource for healthcare providers, ancillary staff, patients, families, and the general public.
- Consultation - Provides expert knowledge and guidance in infection prevention, control, and epidemiology.
- Occupational health - Collaborates with occupational health in the development of strategies that address the risk of disease transmission to healthcare providers and ancillary staff.
- Program administration and evaluation - Systematically evaluates the effectiveness of the program appropriate to the practice setting.
- Fiscal responsibility - Practices in a fiscally responsible and accountable manner.
- Performance improvement - Functions as an integral part of performance improvement initiatives to promote positive patient and employee outcomes.
- Research - Conducts; participates; evaluates; and/or applies relevant research findings to infection prevention, control, and epidemiology practice. Research includes informal epidemiologic studies, e.g., outbreak/cluster investigations, surveillance findings, and others.
SUPPORTIVE COURSE WORK: Course work specific to epidemiology, public health or similarQUALIFICATIONS:National Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred or ability to obtain certification within 3 years of assuming the position.a. Experienced healthcare professional with a BSN or health sciences background: typically a registered nurse (RN), physician, epidemiologist, or medical technologist (MT).
- Knowledge and experience in patient care practices, microbiology, epidemiological principles, infectious diseases, sanitation practices, disinfection/sterilization, aseptic technique, adult education, communication, program administration.
- Prior infection control experience preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs required
- Completes an APIC basis training course within the first six months of assuming the position.
- Becomes certified in infection prevention and control when eligible through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC); and maintains certification.
- Excellent problem solving, listening and language skills are necessary.
- Must be fluent in spoken and written English with proficient writing.
- Strong computer skills and proficient in computer applications such as MS Office, Optilink Staffing and Scheduling, Cerner E.H.R., Kronos.
- Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
Preferred: Academic degree in nursing (Bachelor's or master's degree) or related health science. Experience:Required: 3-5 years clinical experience in an acute care facility. Certifications:Required: Currently licensed, certified, or registered to practice profession as required by law, regulation in state of practice or policy; CPR; National Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or obtain within 2 years of assuming the position.
