The primary responsibility of the Outpatient Dietitian is a consulting role providing patients (individually or group classes) education including evaluation, documentation, and the development, implementation and coordination of the outpatient nutrition education program to optimize patient outcomes and health. In addition, as a Certified Diabetic Educator, the Outpatient Dietitian will provide diabetes self-management education and training to individuals and groups in an outpatient setting according to the scope of practice, standards of practice and professional performance for Diabetes Educators. This position is assigned to specific cost centers, programs or projects to provide nutrition services compatible with established standards of practices and in compliance with state and federal regulations. This position coordinates with management and appropriate staff to promote a positive image of HUMC as an expert leader in the area of Nutrition.Responsibilities
  • Assess patients' nutritional needs and current health plans to help develop and implement nutrition care plans and education.
  • Work with physicians and health care personnel to assess health, environmental, and cultural factors, which may influence the nutritional needs and education of patients or clients.
  • Create individualized dietary recommendations for individuals and groups for the management of chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension, obesity, etc.
  • Educate patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans, diet modifications, and healthy food selection and preparation as indicated by diagnosis and medical history.
  • Instruct patients and their families on the use of nutritional supplements and other products for the management of chronic disease states.
  • Coordinate nutrition counseling services.
  • Plan and conduct training programs in dietetics, nutrition, and institutional management and administration for staff, health-care personnel, and the general public.
  • Plan appropriate interventions and follow up with patients.
  • Utilizes validated sources on the internet and in print for information regarding diets, nutrition, therapeutic treatments, and consumer trends to improve services and propose new initiatives related to nutrition scope of practice to promote wellbeing for clients/consumers and maintain HUMC cutting edge image, in consultation with management.
  • Serves as public relations spokesperson and media representative for nutrition related topics.
  • Serves as nutrition expert consultant for requested medical center programs.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of nutrition education and training.
  • Implements performance improvement strategies as identified through review of program outcomes.
  • Assists Director and Clinical Nutrition Manager in program development and marketing.
  • Travels within the medical center campus and to off-site locations.
  • Serves as a Preceptor to Dietetic Interns and Students.
  • Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 75 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, or equivalent Education in Nutrition that meets the Commission on Dietetic Registration education requirement for certification (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist).
  • Minimum 2 years' experience with 1:1 as well as group nutrition counseling.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles and practices of medical nutrition therapy, medical management of chronic health conditions, and allied services.
  • Demonstrated special interest in the area of community medicine.
  • Ability to relate to and educate patients and clients from culturally diverse communities/backgrounds.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including intermittent evenings and host seminars/classes along with support groups.
  • Must be willing to counsel patients at least 1-2 evenings/month.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure by prioritizing work activities or renegotiating deadlines.
  • Be able to give constructive feedback when teaching patients and staff.
  • Maintain a positive attitude with changing conditions.
  • Demonstrates organizational abilities and dependability.
  • Experience showing strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to work under general supervision and have a professional and mature demeanor.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • Master's degree in nutrition or dietetics or related field from an accredited institution, meeting the didactic requirements of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience of acute care clinical.
  • Working knowledge of HealthTouch and EPIC.
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Must currently be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintain 75 continuing education credits every 5 years in the area of nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy of various disease states.
  • Must currently hold Certification by the National Certification board of Diabetes Educators.
