The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has an opening for a Thrift Store Manager I, located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position description.Administers and monitors the day-to-day operations of a family store; supervises volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel; schedules, trains and instructs staff in the proper methods and procedures for performing work; inspects work in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness; conducts and/or reviews performance evaluations for staff; provides hiring/firing decisions.Ensures that production standards are maintained based on sales data and ensures adequate socking of the sales floor and minimizes the amount of time donations spend in processing.Manages stock in keeping fresh stock on the sales floor and removing stale stock in accordance with the stock rotation system; plans, supervises and oversees store employee’s maintenance of displays.Analyzes store sales data and manages the store in accordance with same; determines pricing and stock needs based on sales data and donation intake; ensures store turns and maintains a profit; ensures that stock is routinely rotated and ensures that prices encourage the desired level of stock turnover and profit margin; develops methods to increase sales as necessary.Ensures the stores has sufficient staffing to cash out customers; prepares and balances the cash drawer and runs routine register print-outs to investigate errors and overages/shortages; prepares and delivers bank deposits; ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records in accordance with established operating procedures.Collects sales data for the purpose of publishing sales data reports that will direct and impact the operational planning of the store’s profitable success.Ensures that personnel maintain a secure, neat, and efficient check-out workstation which includes the adequate organizing, cleaning, stocking, and operation of the cashier workstation.Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; manages, documents, and follows up on donor and customer related grievances, suggestions, and recommendations.Ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.Ensure that the donation intake center is adequately staffed and operated in accordance to best practices.Manages resources, personnel, donations, and processes for optimal results to equate to consistent ongoing profits.Ensures store staff answer the store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner, assist customers by responding to questions and provide directions and/or general information to optimize customer’s shopping experiences and create return customers.Ensures that the store is always clean, safe, stocked, and operating under the numerous policies, procedures, and best practices governed by The Salvation Army.Ensures that the store is opened and closed in accordance with Salvation Army established policies, procedures, and best practices.Ensures staff is available to assist donors with donation intake and donation recording in accordance with store policy.Assists customers in carrying purchased/donated items.OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for the store operations.Assists with seasonal projects as requested, to include general social services, Angel Tree and Neediest Families programs.May participate in the receiving, sorting, pricing, and distribution of donated items in the warehouse; ensures that items are processed in a timely manner and in compliance with established policies and procedures.Assists in disaster relief projects as needed.Performs other related work as required.MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:General Office Equipment Cash RegisterMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:High School diploma or G.E.D. with one year equivalent college coursework in business, finance, or similar fieldandTwo years successful experience working in a field where producing and sustaining profit is a requirement, with at least one year experience in a supervisory capacity,orany equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:Valid State Driver’s LicenseKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of effective and efficient techniques for producing and sustaining profit over a long period of time.Knowledge of basic principles and practices of retail store management.Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective customer relations.Knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel management.Knowledge of value of, and fair and reasonable prices for, sale of retail items.Ability to turn profit and sustain profit over course of employment.Ability to learn the in-depth principles and practices of successful retail store management.Ability to determine, maintain, and stay within a budget.Ability to count money.Ability to prepare and maintain attractive merchandise displays.Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete store sales and deposit records.Ability to evaluate overall store operations in order to detect deficiencies and implement appropriate corrective action.Ability to supervise, lead, and motivate the work of subordinate employees.Ability to price donated merchandise reasonably and fairly.MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:Ability to meet attendance requirements.Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.Ability to perform mathematical computations and count change.Ability to operate a cash register.Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull light objects (less than 25 lbs).WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed in a normal store environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.All employees recognize that The Salvation Army is a church and agree that they will do nothing as an employee of The Salvation Army to undermine its religious mission.When an application is selected for review, typically, only applicants who indicate the relevant education and experience requirements, as indicated in the job description for the position, may be considered for job openings.
