- Design new as well as improve and sustain existing automation equipment for high power laser diode packaging and testing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to transfer new equipment into manufacturing.
- Be the key engineer responsible for assembly stations and process transfer from Santa Clara to Traverse City.
- Support equipment technicians in troubleshooting difficult equipment failures.
- Minimize down time on production equipment by planning proper preventative maintenance and calibration service schedules.
- Lead the conceptual development of automation equipment, define equipment requirements and specifications, and involve third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process as required. Participate in supplier and equipment buyoffs.
- Drive manufacturing tooling, fixtures, machine design and development for manual and automated assembly and optics/fiber alignment, as well as testing of laser diodes.
- Drive automated machine qualification including capability, calibration, and Gage R&R.
- Work closely with manufacturing groups to debug and optimize equipment and automated processes to improve efficiency, cycle time, quality, and production yields.
- Collect and evaluate equipment data using SPC to ensure equipment baselines and operations remain in control and quality maintenance standards are met.
- Maintain equipment documentation, BOM, training programs, and lead the training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Physics, 5+ years of experience in process assembly, test and automation equipment required or
- Master's Degree in Engineering, 3+ years of experience in precision assembly, test and automation equipment.
- Hands on working experience with optical fibers, lasers, optics and precision opto-mechanical systems and tools.
- Experience in semiconductor laser diodes packaging and testing, optics and fiber coupling, would be a big plus.
- Experience with SQL and Minitab is a plus.
- Due to ITAR regulations, U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien Status required.
- Must be self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and meet project deadlines.
- Strong project management with excellent problem solving and communication skills.
- Able to multitask between several projects and handle a lot of detail.
- Proficient in LabVIEW or Python, Java, C, C++, C#, VB, PLC Programming.
- Knowledge of statistics, SPC, DOE, DFM, FMEA, Six Sigma, and equipment design.
- Knowledge in a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, experience with SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of robotics, linear stages, motors, pneumatics, motion controllers, vision, PLC and PC based control systems.
- Work is performed in a cleanroom manufacturing setting.
- Ability to sit and/or stand for an 8-hour shift.
- Ability to wear cleanroom garments for an 8-hour shift.
