Offer DescriptionIn a context of the structures lightening in the transport domain while maintaining operational safety requirements (fire/high temperature risk), the thermo-mechanical behavior of composite materials is studied in the Mechanics of Materials research team. The studies carried out so far have highlighted the importance of porosity in the fire resistance process. This Ph.D. focuses on the study of the mechanisms linked to porosities in a composite material: the formation/growth, induced by the decomposition of the polymer matrix and by decohesion due to internal stresses; but also the coalescence of these two types of porosity. These porosities will contribute to modifying the distribution of mechanical stresses and heat transfer within the material. It is therefore essential to characterize the density, spatial distribution and morphology of porosities. This research program is based on original and unique means, in particular a mechanical fire resistance bench, in which a mechanical loading can be applied on test pieces subjected to thermal attack by a kerosene flame. To complete these analyses, the team also has an X-ray tomograph equipped with a force cell. These means, combined with other analysis tools (diffusivometer, optical microscopy) will permit to study the initiation, propagation and coalescence of cracks induced by porosities. The doctoral student will thus benefit from a scientific environment favorable to the understanding of complex multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena. The approach will be mainly experimental (combined or residual mechanical tests, in-situ X-ray tomography, thermo-physical characterizations, etc.) to establish laws of thermo-mechanical behavior from these porosity-linked mechanisms.RequirementsResearch Field Engineering » Mechanical engineering Education Level Master Degree or equivalentResearch Field Engineering » Materials engineering Education Level Master Degree or equivalentSkills/QualificationsSuccessful education in engineering mechanics or science of materials.
