- Design and perform experiments and record data: Performs research experiments independently or semi-independently in accordance with protocols approved by the principal investigator. Such experiments may involve the use of laboratory animals and may require evening and/or weekend duties. Follow and formulate both existing and new research protocols. Independently reproduce, evaluate, research, and improve techniques currently used. Analyze data, perform statistical and graphical analysis of data, and interpret results. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments. Assist in training postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and junior laboratory personnel in laboratory techniques and equipment. Contribute and write material for reports, publications, journal articles, and abstracts. Maintain an integral role in the laboratory's meetings, presentations, and publications.
- Prepares and tests substrate, conducts assays, and prepares tissue cultures for use in research studies, as applicable. Collects and process blood, human tissue specimens, and other samples as needed. Such activities may be performed independently and may require evening and weekend hours. Standardize and establish new published procedures; evaluate innovative techniques. Participate in the development of new assays and testing of new protocols. Modify existing procedures as necessary to troubleshoot or make modifications based on changes in research design.
- Ensures accuracy of laboratory analytical procedures as required by specific research projects.
- Collects and controls experimental data and maintains accurate daily logs of experiments including methods, results, and conclusions.
- Interprets the results of data analyses with input from the principal investigator.
- Assists the principal investigator in the preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals.
- Make recommendations about refinement and/or replacement of laboratory analytical procedures. Implements such refinements or new procedures with input from the principal investigator.
- Instructs other laboratory workers and students in standard methods, practices, procedures, and equipment operations.
- Maintains a clean working area and performs general laboratory maintenance. Adheres to proper safety techniques and procedures.
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrate high clerical accuracy, attention to detail, strong organizational skills and an independent work initiative.
- Computer literate and working knowledge of software applications (word processing, spreadsheet and database).
- Analytical ability sufficient to compare data; mathematical ability sufficient to perform algebraic calculations and statistical analysis.
- Ability to synthesize information and deal with new situations by applying past experiences.
- Knowledge of Scientific Terminology and ability to synthesize publicly available literature in the relevant fields required.
- Capable of meeting time demands necessary to execute experiments.
- Able to identify mistakes and discuss resolution plan. Attention to the veracity of results.
- he research assistant with a Bachelor or Master degree in Biology or related fields with laboratory experience will set up, operate and maintain the laboratory instruments, monitor experiments, make observations, calculate and record results, and often develop conclusions.
- This individual is familiar with basic scientific principles.
- Candidates with experience in mouse handling, cell culture, cell-based assays, Molecular and/or Cellular Biology and general biochemistry techniques are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of science from an accredited college with a minimum of 2 years experience or Master’s Degree experience post Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
