Job DescriptionTennessee State University Department of Music invites applications for the position of
Instructor/Assistant Professor - Choral Music Education/Choir Director for August 2024.
This is a 9-month tenure track appointment with the fulltime faculty member teaching primarily in the Music Education area while also serving as University Choir Director and directing other vocal ensembles as assigned. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including applied voice instruction, vocal techniques, voice class for non-majors, choral methods and materials, vocal diction, and choral conducting. Prepare and supervise vocal music education majors for student teaching. Assist in facilitating on-campus service and community outreach opportunities for local schools. Recruit music students and assist in facilitating a smooth operation of the vocal/choral music program. Ability to (piano) accompany choral rehearsals highly desirable. Ability to teach music history, music theory, commercial music, music technology, jazz education, and/or general music education is desirable. Additional duties as assigned.The successful candidate will assist in ongoing program assessment, revision, and enhancement, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with local and regional school teachers, development of choral music curriculum and the maintaining of NASM standards for music education, and serve on departmental, college and university committees.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's and Master's Degrees in Music from accredited institutions required, ABD considered. Completed doctorate in Music is preferred and required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and required for tenure. One or more degrees in Music Education preferred. Minimum of three years of fulltime, licensed K-12 choral music education teaching in a public and/or private school environment is required. Evidence of proven success in choral teaching and conducting, outstanding record and/or potential for college teaching including advising and mentoring vocal students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, and quality scholarly activity in music/music education. The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate vocal and piano skills.Evidence of acquiring and practicing formal teaching methodologies and classroom management and of rehearsing student ensembles required. Evidence of current musical performances, as well as current educational/musical projects.
