- Uses considerable independent judgment and technical knowledge in the manufacturing of machined parts, precision tools, jigs and fixtures, and assemblies.
- Reads and interprets complex blueprints and sketches to perform any required machining operation to exact specifications. Produces high quality parts at high level of productivity.
- Sets up and operates all available machine tools and miscellaneous shop equipment. May suggest and document alternative processing to efficiently utilize time and equipment.
- Selects proper cutting tools and determines proper process for any given condition, obtaining optimum production and high quality by properly judging the following: a) amount of stock to be removed, b) rigidity of part and machine c) mechanical properties of material and cutter, d) speed and feed selection for maximum production and tool life.
- Analyzes performance of tools, determines source of malfunctions and takes corrective action. Uses all precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, scales, verniers, calipers and depth gages. Checks and verifies the accuracy of all work performed and is responsible for consistent good quality.
- Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all shop equipment as required.
- Assists in the training of lesser experienced machinists or trainees.
- Ability to program, set-up and run CNC machines as well as set-up and run manual equipment in the shop.
- Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and sketches. Must fully understand all methods of dimensioning and all symbols. Ability to comprehend and work to brief verbal instructions. Have good knowledge of shop math, including trigonometry, normally associated with a technical high school education, plus 5 years of machining experience.
- Good broad knowledge of all materials generally used in the machine building industry (basic mechanical and chemical properties, machine ability, heat treat ability).
- Knowledge of speed and feed rates , their relationship to materials, tools and machines. Familiarity with all pertaining charts and tables. Ability to apply knowledge with good judgment to accomplish high production and quality.
- Ability to operate all machine tools and ship equipment in the most proficient manner. Analytical ability to determine proper procedures and to select machines and tools to be used to obtain optimum efficiency. Knowledge and ability to grind all cutting tools.
- Ability to manufacture any conceivable machine parts, tools, jigs and fixtures to sketches or verbal instructions. Knowledge and imagination to improve on given concepts and to design tools. This is normally acquired in 5 years of related experience.
- Mechanical ability and manual dexterity to be able to perform all required duties with relative ease. Ability to occasionally cope with mental/visual strain associated with some precision jobs.
- Physical stamina for standing during working hours and to safely handle all parts and accessories typical to machine shop operation.
