QUALIFICATIONSMember of the active Medical Staff and Executive Council at Hospital for Special Care - required.Board certified in Neurology & Neuromuscular Medicine - required.Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in Neuromuscular Medicine - required.JOB SUMMARYTo provide Neuromuscular patient care. To teach principles of Neuromuscular Medicine (NM), to provide NM leadership to programs and personnel; to develop NM service models of care and to advocate for diagnostic and supportive care for NM patients; to perform electromyography.PHYSICAL DEMANDSPredominantly involves sitting. Standing, walking, reaching and bending are occasional. Push/pulling up to 35 pounds.COGNITIVE DEMANDSSignificantly related to patient care/evaluation problem solving and planning. Communication is key for running interdisciplinary team. Computation, particularly with regard to impairment evaluations and rating.WORK DEMANDSPredominantly indoor climate controlled work climate. Occasional exposure to dust/odors and blood/wounds. Varied work demands balancing patient care requirements, meetings, etc.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Participate in Neuromuscular Medicine Clinical and Research Programs.
  • Care for patients with Neuromuscular Disorders. Perform EMGs.
  • Interacts with medical staff/referring physicians to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participates in rotating inpatient and chronic care coverage.
  • Acts as Medical Director of Outpatient Services providing clinical direction to staff and input on policies and procedures.
  • Plans/implements all interventions/interactions with an awareness of cultural, ethnic, religious, language, and age related/developmental needs of each patient.
  • Ensures the adequacy of the individual treatment prescriptions for patients, including any contraindications and/or precautions.
  • In coordination with the hospital's employee health services staff, provides medical treatment to hospital employees eligible for employee health services through the hospital's employee health services program.
  • Consults with Program managers and Business Unit Director in development of NM services programs.
  • Interacts with Medical Staff physicians informally and as member of Medical Executive Committee attending 75% of meetings.
  • Promotes/advocates for neuromuscular patients and for individuals with activity limitations.
  • Establishes policies and procedures that identify the functions and responsibilities for NM physicians providing treatments. Accountable for all professional activities within Neuromuscular Medicine department. Responsible for conduct of NM practitioners.
  • Recommends to the Medical Staff criteria for clinical privileges in the department or service, and recommends clinical privileges for each member of the department; reviews the professional performance of all individuals who have delineated clinical privileges in the department of clinical service.
  • Continuously assesses the quality and appropriateness of patient care provided within NM services to assure continuous performance improvement is monitored and evaluated, and participates in outcomes measurement and management activities.
  • Is responsible for the teaching education and research programs in the NM program.
  • Establishes together with Medical Staff and administration, the type and scope of services required to meet the needs of the patients and the hospital; including strategic planning, financial planning and decision making for NM services.
  • Gives guidance on the overall medical policies of the hospital, making specific recommendations and suggestions regarding NM services in order to assure quality patient care.
  • Develops ongoing relationships with stakeholders, such as families, patients, other physicians payers and community members.
  • Participates in comprehensive outpatient program development and modification.
  • Participates in education of medical residents, students, and neurology residents in NM service.
  • Gives direction and in-service to Neurology and Neuromuscular departments on topics in neuromuscular medicine.
  • Continues own education in areas pertinent to hospital mission as documented in credentials file.
