Job SummaryPlans, prepares, cooks, and serves nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules; ensures all meals are prepared and served in a safe and presentable manner; cleans kitchen facilities, equipment, and appliances; maintainsinventory of kitchen supplies and food in a neat and orderly manner.Essential FunctionsThis job description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this job description.Cook Responsibilities:Plans menus for the preparation and serving of nutritional meals.Cleans, cooks, and prepares a variety of foods and beverages utilizing kitchen equipment, utensils, and supplies in accordance with established Salvation Army policies and procedures and economical cooking methods.May test food being cooked by tasting, smelling, and piercing food with a fork to determine that the food is properly cooked. May carve meats, provide the proper portions of food on plates, addgravies and sauces, and garnishes to food. May wash, peel, cut, and shred vegetables and fruits. May cut, trim, and bone meat prior to or after cooking.Ensures that enough food is prepared based on the number of people to be served and that food is prepared in a timely, efficient, effective,and economical manner.Serves food and beverages in a presentable manner or assist persons being served requiring additional assistance.Sets tables with plates, napkins, utensils, and buffet line for self-service.Cleans tables, chairs, floors, dishes, utensils, and kitchen appliances.Stores, refrigerates, and freezes foods in a safe and economical manner; monitors expiration dates on all foods ensuring proper disposal of food with expired dates.Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room; ensures that all meals are prepared in a safe manner; ensures kitchenpersonnel practice proper personal hygiene.Maintains proper supply and orderliness of kitchen stock inventory in order to meet the needs of the kitchen.Maintains a positive working atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional manner that will establish and promote a professional working relationship with vendors, donors,customers, beneficiaries, co-workers, and management.Other ResponsibilitiesPerform other related work as required.Materials and EquipmentStove Oven Refrigerators Freezers Kitchen Utensils Blender MixerFood Processor Mop BroomKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge, skills, and abilities to properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils in accordance with local, state, and federal health regulations.Knowledge, skills, and abilities to store food in accordance with established Salvation Army policies and procedures and within local, state, and federal regulations.Knowledge, skills, and abilities to prepare nutritionally tasteful, and safe food for large groups of people in an economical, efficient, effective, and timely manner in accordance with established Salvation Army policies and procedures and within local, state, and federal regulations.Knowledge, skills, and ability to successfully communicate, both verbally and in writing, in the English language.Ability to read and comprehend manuals and written instructions.Ability to alphabetize, organize, and maintain various files.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Educationand ExperienceHigh school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of experience planningand cooking meals for large groups of people or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Licenses and CertificationsNonePhysical RequirementsAbility to meet attendance requirements.Ability to successfully cook, taste, and smell food.Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to servings and cooking instructions.Duties are usually performed by frequent walking and/or standing with some bending, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, squatting and carrying light objects (usually less than 25 lbs.) 15-75% of work time.
