- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Bachelor's/Associate's degree preferred.
- One year of experience in an animal care facility/operations or equivalent experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) preferred or eligible.
- Assists with the oversight of the animal care staff of the vivaria.
- Maintains knowledge of species specific handling, restraint, breeding and technical skills.
- Direct contact with a variety of animal species.
- Responsible for training and mentoring of animal care staff.
- Makes recommendations to the Supervisor for promotions.
- Oversees record keeping for the animal care program (animal room logs, census, breeding, technical services, etc.).
- Assists in facility inspections and assists in managing the quality assurance program in the animal facilities.
- Determines needs and makes recommendations for staffing and new/replacement equipment and/or services.
- Assists in ensuring facility and equipment maintenance is meeting operational standards.
- Assists in training and ensuring safety programs are followed.
- May participate in work start meetings for new projects and biohazard work (ABSL1-3 practices).
- Assists in maintaining compliance for accreditation of animal care program (ARC SOPs, IACUC policy, the Guide, AWA, NIH guidelines, USDA, CDC, PHS policy, etc.).
- Provides input for animal care staff performance evaluations.
- Assists in the disciplinary actions for animal care staff implementing ARC attendance policy.
- Provides backup oversight of the facility in the absence of the Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor.
- Mentor and develop animal care staff. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work requires ability to work logically and efficiently.
- Work requires ability to push/pull pieces of equipment which may have dimensions in excess of 6 ft. high, 3 ft. wide and/or 8 ft. long, weights ranging up to 25lbs.
- Work requires ability to lift equipment up to 50lbs.
- Work requires ability to utilize hand tools and must be able to follow oral and written instructions of varying length and complexity.
- Work requires ability to understand and follow concepts of clean and dirty flow patterns and sanitation and disinfection and utilize appropriate application.
- Work requires ability to understand basic mechanical operations and routine maintenance, access basic computer functions, and mix chemical solutions correctly.
- Work requires ability to maintain accurate written records.
- Work requires ability to accurately measure/dilute cleaning solutions.
- Work may require protective clothing.
- Work is performed primarily in laboratory area.
