Work Location: Onsite, Washburn University Foundation BuildingPrimary Accountability:
The Senior Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for the overall image and brand of the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation (“Foundation”), and provides leadership and strategic direction on donor relations, stewardship, marketing and communications for the organization.The position leads an experienced team developing event and membership marketing materials, publications, digital assets, development proposals, and important short term and long term stewardship projects. The person will regularly interact with Foundation staff and leadership on organizational priorities as well as key campus communicators including but not limited to Public Relations, School of Law, Washburn Institute of Technology and the Office of the University President.Major Duties:
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of a detailed ongoing marketing/communications and stewardship plan in support of organizational and University priorities;
  • Supports major gift and annual giving priorities through the development and implementation of branding, messaging, talking points and marketing materials;
  • Supports the University and School of Law Alumni Associations with membership marketing;
  • Establishes goals, objectives and marketing processes related to alumni and donor events;
  • Directs and serves as final editor of online and print communications;
  • Supports all campus partners with communications to donors and alumni as well as alumni event initiatives;
  • Oversees the vision, planning and maintenance of the organization’s digital assets including social media, websites and mobile app;
  • Plans and coordinates media relations, press releases, and speeches/programs for Foundation and campus leadership;
  • Represents the Foundation at alumni and donor events and works to establish strong relationships with constituents;
  • Manages creative external resources as needed;
  • Manages the overall communications, marketing and donor relations budgets;
  • Recommends and manages the implementation of best practices in strategic event, marketing and communications processes;
  • Develops and maintains documentation of policies and procedures related to stewardship, marketing and communications; and
  • Works on special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or other related discipline from an accredited college/university is required; Master’s degree is preferred;
  • Five or more years of experience in a communications, marketing, public relations or other related field required;
  • Exceptional writing and editing experience required;
  • Management experience preferred;
  • Experience in higher education preferred;
  • Experience with a comprehensive fundraising campaign preferred;
  • Experience coordinating outside vendors preferred;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to think creatively, strategically and proactively;
  • Excellent written and oral communication, organizational skills and project management skills;
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of university professionals in a high-volume, deadline-oriented environment;
  • Must be able to take initiative to coordinate processes and solve problems;
  • Professional attitude and the ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team;
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and desktop publishing software required; and
  • Reliable and predictable attendance.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time; and,
  • Ability to read computer screens and mail.
Work Environment:
  • Professional and deadline-oriented environment in an office setting; and
  • Interaction with staff, campus partners and potential donors.
