- Establish and maintain clear, positive, and consistent lines of communication with the Practice Group Leader, Managing Partner, Chief Operating Officer, and other Firm staff.
- Monitor and support the morale and engagement of attorneys in the practice group, developing programs and ensuring access to information, resources, and leadership.
- Regularly visit with practice group members, including those located in other offices, to ensure clear and consistent communication and coordination across offices. Ensure that all attorneys in the practice group are integrated across geographic locations.
- Schedule and prepare agendas for practice group meetings and other practice group gatherings and communications, as needed.
- Develop and monitor financial reports for the practice group. Collaborate with Accounting to make refinements and streamline monthly reporting.
- Review weekly billable hours and monthly financial reports and identify trends/developments that require attention and action.
- Monitor financial and other performance metrics of the practice group, including revenue, utilization, realization, and productivity. Advise on steps to improve and achieve identified financial objectives and work with other Firm staff on issues of matter pricing and leverage.
- Support implementation efforts through monitoring and reporting on the progress of firmwide strategic projects and initiatives in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.
- Support the Practice Group Leader in defining and implementing appropriate strategies to manage and support the profitable growth of the practice group. Evaluate and implement improvements to the practice group's structure. Develop improvements to be more efficient by leveraging resources across offices, departments, and practices.
- Work with Marketing, Accounting, Professional Development, and other internal Firm resources to prepare and update a business plan for the practice group as well as for individual attorneys. Evaluate and keep track of all practice group and individual attorney business plans. Monitor the progress of the practice group business plan. Interface and coordinate with Marketing on other business development and public relations matters.
- Liaise with the IT team where appropriate on innovation and client value initiatives for the practices.
- Work with Firm staff on the planning and implementing various practice group and firmwide events such as meetings, retreats, and special programs.
- Participate in recruiting new associates and lateral attorneys and advise the Practice Group Leader, the Chief Talent Officer, and Managing Partner on hiring recommendations and future timekeeper needs.
- Work with the Attorney Talent team to ensure the integration and smooth transition of laterals into the practice group.
- Monitor attorney utilization and work assignments, business development, and other professional opportunities to ensure that they are equitably distributed within the practice groups.
- Monitor workload and utilization reports to identify productivity issues and counsel attorneys where appropriate.
- Work with the Attorney Talent team on attorney performance evaluations, and training and development needs.
- Support the Practice Group Leader in providing input and recommendations to the Executive Committee regarding attorney promotions and partner compensation. Coordinate and participate in Partnership Promotion Meetings with associates consistent with Firm policies. Assist the Practice Group Leader in providing input and recommendations to the Associate Compensation and Review Committee for associate compensation.
- Use diligent efforts to see that practice group members meet revenue and expense budgetary goals and expectations, including billable and non-billable hours requirements.
- Review and approve new clients and matters as part of the intake process and enforce related standards for the practice group, consistent with Firm guidelines and in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.
- Monitor and enforce timekeeping and billing practices in partnership with the Practice Group Leader.
- Determine, with input from the Practice Group Leader, Managing Partner, and the Firm's financial resources, the viability/profitability of requests for alternate work schedules or alternative billing/pricing arrangements.
- Work with the Accounting team and Pricing Director, as needed, to help address client discount and expense approval requests that require practice group input in accordance with established Firm policies.
- Support the Practice Group Leader, as needed, in other matters regarding practice group management, approvals, and initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's or JD preferred
- Five or more years of supervisory and/or management experience in a law firm or professional services environment
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and build credibility with lawyers
- Possesses superior organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work independently and be proactive
- Strong computer skills including experience with f Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
