- Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and the Internet;
- Ability to work independently as well as with others;
- Ability to recognize and respond to individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population;
- Ability to interact with middle and high school students
- Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and through written skills;
- Ability to work in a virtual environment;
- Ability to pay close attention to detail;
- Ability to represent Educational Talent Search in a positive manner.
- Creating a community environment conducive to the academic enhancement, personal growth, and development of Educational Talent Search students.
- Providing individualized guidance and ongoing feedback for facilitated individual mentoring sessions with assigned mentees.
- Mentoring efforts will be focused on the following topics and skill sets:
- Academic and Personal Success Adjusting to the college environment Time Management and Study Skills Safety, Health and Wellness Independence and appropriate behavior.
- Participate in preliminary and on-going trainings and team meetings;
- Communicate training needs and/or student concerns to Near Peer Mentor supervisor;
- Serve as a role model for mentees by maintaining a positive attitude and cultivating relationships;
- Remain sensitive to subtle mood changes and erratic behavior that may be exhibited by students;
- Assist in the process of identifying student needs and interests;
- Guide students’ in the management of their daily schedule of activities;
- Monitor students during classes;
- Disseminate on-going communication with all mentees through e-mails, mailings, phone calls, surveys, newsletters, flyers, etc.;
- Document all mentoring sessions and maintain accurate records;
- Provide timely and open communications with supervisor regarding mentee progress, issues and concerns;
- Assist in the organization and production of mentee recognition;
- Assist with check-in registration and check-out procedures;
- Handle minor problems and referring all others to the appropriate ETS staff;
- Oversee students at recreational activities, field trips, and outings;
- Assist other Near Peer Mentors as needed;
- Attend staff meetings with the Program Director and other staff to plan and evaluate program operations;
- Maintain an awareness of current College and ETS policies and guidelines;
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Director.
