Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.HDR is looking for a Senior Rail Bridge Engineer to play a key role in the continued growth of HDR’s freight rail program with a focus on the Norfolk Southern and CSX structures programs. This position may be based out of our Atlanta, Charlotte, or Raleigh office. The freight rail network is a vital link in our national and global supply chain markets, and the Senior Rail Bridge Engineer will be involved in developing critical infrastructure for the sustainable movement of goods and people. Whether it is a traditional railroad structure across a major river, or an engineering marvel that redefines freight mobility at historic bottlenecks, our Senior Rail Bridge Engineers are involved in projects that matter. Join HDR, and be a part of our next award!On a day-to-day basis, the Senior Rail Bridge Engineer will be expected to:
  • Serve as Discipline or Task Lead for railroad bridge/structural engineering/design projects
  • Serve as Bridge Designer and/or Checker through workshare with other offices to support the Freight Rail Market Sector and other market sectors as needed
  • Support Project Managers by leading or participating in marketing and contracting activities
  • Manage scope, budget, and schedule, as well as development of design criteria, specifications, project guides, project meeting notes, and cost estimating activities
  • Perform railroad bridge/structural engineering/design planning, analysis, and design aspects of rail and rail-related transportation projects
  • Lead and/or perform detailed QC reviews of projects
  • Support Project Managers by leading, or participating in client and stakeholder visits, site visits, field assessments, and construction inspections as needed
  • Attend industry events and represent HDR as needed
  • Mentor younger staff and support technical development
  • Supervise junior staff performance of engineering tasks
  • Work across industries with rail, industrial, terminal, utility, agency, DOT, port, transit, and other industry clients
  • Provide leadership across technical disciplines
*LI-SM1QualificationsRequired QualificationsBachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringPE licenseMinimum of 10 years bridge/structural design experienceProven, hands-on experience in all aspects of rail bridge/structures engineering/design projectsExperience working with AREMA’s Manual for Railway Engineering and/or other railroad design guidelines, specifications, and criteriaProficiency in Microsoft Office and Project softwareExperience and basic proficiency using MicroStation or AutoCADProficiency in railroad structural analysis programs, bridge design software, load rating and bridge rehabilitationDemonstrated leadership skills, strong communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment with various teamsDesire to mentor younger staff and grow in skill set related to the railroad industryAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned cultureMust be able to pass a background checkMust have a valid Driver’s LicensePreferred QualificationsMaster of Science in Structural EngineeringSE licenseAbility to become licensed as a PE in additional jurisdictions through the NCEES or similar6 years railroad industry experienceProject Management experience managing projects for rail, industrial or transit clientsDemonstrated client development or client management experienceConstruction inspection or construction management experience is a plusExperience in technical writing, communicating, and presenting to clients and the public is desirableFamiliarity with engineering software packages such as: LARSA, LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB-MultiPier, LPile, SAP2000, CSiBridge, and/or spColumnLocal candidates are preferredWhy HDRAt HDR, we know work isn't only about who you work for it's also about what you do and how you do it.
