A company that specializes in semi-conductor manufacturing is hiring a Laser Engineer to lead the reliability improvement and failure analysis for next generation laser technology for multiple markets. For this role you will need experience in Failure Analysis of Laser Diodes, and will need to provide solutions to technical issues. The main aim in this position is to oversee all aspects of the reliability data analysis, testing, modeling, and reporting of next generation lasers. This role will involve contributing reliability and FA concepts during new product development, qualification, and ongoing production.Key Functions
  • Implement burn-in, HAST, HALT, and multi-cell reliability protocols to support various stages of product development, qualification, and production screening.
  • Supervise the failure analysis (FA) process when necessary, utilizing internal resources or external vendors to determine the root cause and offering feedback for device design improvement.
  • Evaluate the performance of laser devices throughout development and reliability testing, applying knowledge of device physics and laser design to correlate any performance drifts with design inputs.
  • Oversee GaN Laser Diode component-level qualification stress tests to ensure compliance with customer requirements and guarantee high-quality operation in the field. Stress testing encompasses accelerated lifetime tests, environmental tests, mechanical tests, ESD, etc.
  • Collaborate with and learn from device design engineers and technical program managers (PMs) throughout the entire product development process, from initial concept to release for manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with test engineers and technicians to conduct functional testing for each product, including laser current-power-voltage, spectra/junction temperature measurements, near and far field measurements, etc.
  • Communicate updates on qualification testing through email updates, customer-facing presentations, internal NPI reviews, and documented qualification reports.
  • Define key technical objectives and manage projects through various development phases (feasibility, alpha [design and development], beta [reliability and qualification]), ensuring alignment with program milestones and product reliability requirements.
  • Monitor laser diode performance in both development and production stages.
  • Establish, monitor, analyze, and report key performance metrics to project teams and management.
  • Participate in the development of patent applications.
  • Contribute to program reporting, proposal writing, and program management for both commercial and government programs.
Background/Skills:
  • Hold a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science with 8+ years of experience, or a Ph.D. with +3 years of experience in the Laser/Laser Diode environment.
  • Highly desirable to have experience in Gallium Nitride materials systems (design/modeling, epitaxy, fabrication, or testing).
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to direct and influence across multiple functional departments. Strong team player.
  • Hands-on testing experience, particularly with laser diodes, including light-current-voltage (LIV), spectra, near field, and far field beam parameters under CW is a plus.
  • Hands-on testing experience in reliability stress such as accelerated temperature, high humidity, temperature and power cycling, ESD is a plus.
  • Proficient in deep statistical analysis of large datasets.
  • Familiarity with software data analysis tools (JMP, Minitab, Excel or similar) and data processing software (Python, Matlab or similar).
