Position PurposeThis assignment is for the time that the employee is engaged in basic training at the Fire-Rescue Academy. It is a limited assignment designed to provide the training necessary to become a Fire and Rescue Officer. Included in this time is training for Emergency Medical Technician, a requirement for certification by the Texas State Commission on Fire Protection, as well as training in basic fire suppression. Essential Functions1. Attends formal courses to gain theoretical and practical knowledge in fire suppression and emergency medicine to include, but not limited to, Rules and Regulations, Communications, Fire Cause, Pump-Driver operator and methods and techniques of fire control and rescue operations.2. Performs other related duties, including special projects as requested, or required.3. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the jobMinimum Qualifications
  • Forty-five (45) semester hours of college credit (excluding developmental and repeated courses) with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher from an accredited college or university .
OR
  • A minimum of forty-eight (48) months active service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America with an Honorable or Uncharacterized Discharge (as indicated on separation documents provided by the military [DD214, Member page 4] If on active duty at time of application, applicant must provide a statement of service.
License
  • Must have valid driver's license with good driving record.
Additional Requirements
  • Military discharge must be honorable or uncharacterized (if applicable) .
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) and not have reached thirty-six (36) years of age on the date the Civil Service written examination is administered
  • No felony convictions
  • No class A misdemeanor convictions within the last five (5) years
  • No class B misdemeanor convictions within the last two (2) years
  • No more than four (4) class C misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) years
  • Must not have committed or have been convicted of driving with a suspended license within the last twelve (12) months
  • Must not currently be on probation for DWI or other traffic offenses
  • Must not be on probation for any crime at the time of application
  • Must not be under criminal investigation during the application process
  • Must not have any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citations
  • Must possess the physical/medical health to adequately perform the duties of a Firefighter

Exam covers basic math skills, reading comprehension, ability to read and interpret maps/Mapsco, industrial measurement and mechanical comprehension..
