  • Adult Volleyball
  • Basketball Official
Officials receive a pay of $27.00 per game. This is a seasonal/temporary position and is not eligible to receive City benefits.
  • Basketball officials that possess a current VHSL basketball officiating certification are eligible to receive a pay of $36 per game.
This position officiates athletic sporting events, games, competitions and tournaments. Sports may include, but are not limited to: Adult Softball, Adult Volleyball, Adult Men's and Women's Basketball, Youth Basketball and Flag Football. Reports to a Parks and Recreation Operations Specialist or Athletics Coordinator.Note: This job opportunity is advertised with a closing date of "Continuous."   • Demonstrates ability to officiate athletic programs in a fair and impartial manner;
  • Maintains order among program participants;
  • Monitors and controls compliance with Department regulations and policies;
  • Monitors patron safety and takes necessary precautions, removes safety concerns when they arise; responds appropriately in an urgent/emergency situation;
  • Communicates effectively, professionally, courteously and thoroughly with the highest regard for the customer;
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with players, parents and the public;
  • Assists with the set-up and break-down of athletic events;
  • Works with adults, children and families in an athletic setting;
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education, Experience and SkillsMinimum Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by employment start date;
  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of experience in a recreation or similar environment as an official OR three (3) years as a participant in the specified sport at a high level.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule including early mornings, weeknights, weekends and holidays;
  • All staff serving in this role will be required to complete the Parks and Recreation Certification program for Officials on an annual basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the sport being officiated; thorough knowledge of professional behavior in a recreation environment; ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy; ability to respond appropriately to changing situations; skilled in written and oral communication; ability to work with a team; ability to demonstrate positive customer service skills when communicating with participants, parents and staff; strong safety orientation; physical ability to keep up with the sport being officiated.Physical Conditions & Additional InformationPhysical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor:
MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.This position may be required to work weekends, nights and/or holidays.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness and/or blood-borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.There are no benefits for this position, as it is a temporary, substitute, seasonal or intern position, or the work schedule is less than 20 hours per week.
